Haramaya University Expands Service-Learning Training for Agricultural Students

Haramaya University has expanded its Service-Learning Training Program, which was initially launched under the COPAFEU initiative, to include students studying Agricultural Economics in addition to those in Agribusiness and Value Chain Management.

This expansion supports the university’s goal of fostering inclusive experiential education and enhancing practical skills among students.

On February 19, over 120 students attended specialized sessions on the Foundations of Service Learning, led by Mr. Yeneneh Wubetu, and on Professional Video Production and Documentation, conducted by Dr. Wesagn Berhane.

Organized by the School of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness in collaboration with the Vice President’s Office for Academic Affairs, this training equips participants to connect classroom theory with community impact.

Dr. Fresenbet Zeleke, Head of the School of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, opened the sessions by emphasizing the program’s role in addressing challenges faced during students’ practical attachments. “This training provides technical skills and reflective practice that link academics to real-world applications,” he remarked.

Participating students commended the initiative for offering essential tools for career development and professional documentation of their field experiences. They advocated for making service learning a permanent feature to better prepare graduates for societal contributions.

This initiative reflects Haramaya University’s ongoing commitment to enhancing educational quality by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills. By combining service learning with professional documentation training, the University is shaping graduates who are not only academically proficient but also socially engaged, innovative, and well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to community development and civic engagement efforts.
