Haramaya University Economics Students Forum Charts Path to Future Careers Amid Growing Opportunities
Haramaya University’s Economics Students Forum convened a consultative meeting with the Department of Economics to address future career prospects, job market challenges, and opportunities for economics graduates.
The forum brought together deans, faculty, and students from the Business and Economics College to discuss strategies for connecting academia with industry.

Under the theme “The Future Prospects of Economics: Jobs, Opportunities, and Challenges,” Professor Alemayehu Geda, a renowned economist from Addis Ababa University, highlighted the high demand for economics professionals in policy-making, finance, global sectors, and textiles. He emphasized that students who integrate modern technology, and artificial intelligence into their studies will become highly competitive candidates in the job market.
“Graduates who adapt their education to contemporary technologies and practical applications will find themselves well-positioned as they enter the workforce,” Professor Alemayehu Geda stated.Dr. Temesgen Keno,

a staff member at the College of Business and Economics at Haramaya University, emphasized the importance of networking for professional success in his presentation. He stated, “Building strong professional networks is essential for career advancement. I encourage students to actively engage in research calls, panel discussions, and various forums to improve their communication skills and increase their visibility in the field.”
Students expressed their determination to turn academic challenges into career opportunities and affirmed their readiness to compete effectively. Professor Jema Haji from the Agricultural Economics Department at Haramaya University shared his experiences and insights from his professional journey. He encouraged students to take advantage of practical training and mentorship opportunities.

Mr. Mideksa Dejene, the Head of the Department of Economics at HU, emphasized that the department has gathered a team of experienced faculty members with significant practical backgrounds to provide students with real-world knowledge. He stated, “Our goal is to prepare students to understand the specific challenges they may encounter in their studies and careers, and to equip them with the skills necessary to overcome these obstacles.”

Elizabeth Alemu, President of the Economics Students Forum, described the meeting as a crucial platform aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry. “This forum allows students to gain practical insights from industry experts, learn about available opportunities in their field, and strategically prepare for their professional futures,” she stated.

The consultative meeting highlighted Haramaya University’s commitment to improving graduate employability through focused career guidance and partnerships with industry.
