Haramaya University Advances Chemistry Postgraduate Curriculum to Meet National and Global Demands

Haramaya University’s Department of Chemistry has undertaken a curriculum review of its Master’s Degree programs in Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, and Physical Chemistry.

The initiative, aimed at modernizing the streams, seeks to align postgraduate training with current market needs and industry manpower demands.

The review workshop brought together colleagues from diverse disciplines, industries, and academic institutions, reflecting the University’s commitment to collaborative and evidence-based curriculum development.

Dr. Meseret Amde, Director of Academic Programs at Haramaya University, emphasized that as a leading research institution, the University is strengthening its postgraduate programs with rigor and foresight. “Curriculum revisions should not only be academic in nature, but must also integrate the country’s development plan, stakeholders’ needs, and international influences,” he noted.

Dr. Seleshi Deme, Dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences, highlighted that the revised curriculum is designed to produce highly qualified graduates. He explained that the changes take into account the country’s education roadmap, as well as societal, industrial, and international contexts.

Representing the Oromia Agricultural Research Institute, Dr. Yared Merdasa emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that strengthening postgraduate fields, such as chemistry, plays a vital role in producing graduates capable of contributing to research institutions and advancing scientific innovation.

Dr. Zewedu Bezu, lecturer at Haramaya University, added that the curriculum review followed a rigorous internal evaluation process. “The national workshop has now provided an opportunity to refine the curriculum further. And the results will be incorporated into the final approval,” he explained.
