Agricultural professionals from the Dire Dawa City Administration received specialized training on vermicompost production as an effective natural fertilizer to preserve soil fertility, promote soil health, and restore degraded landscapes.

The training, conducted under the SUNCASA project, focused on natural resource management techniques to safeguard soil quality and promote sustainable land restoration. Dr. Asfaw Kebede, Technical Coordinator of the SUNCASA project from Haramaya University, emphasized that natural challenges require natural solutions. “Through vermicomposting and various natural resource conservation practices, we can effectively address environmental degradation,” he stated.

The comprehensive program provides practical guidelines for natural resource management that have been tested in the field by experts and institutions to ensure they are applicable for professionals. Dr. Asfaw confirmed that, in addition to the Dire Dawa City Administration, the manuals will also be used for the surrounding regions for broader implementation.

Teferi Tadesse, a lecturer in Natural Resource Management and Conservation at Haramaya University, emphasized the importance of the training, stating, “Dire Dawa and its surrounding areas are facing severe water scarcity and soil erosion. This training effectively addresses these critical issues by providing practical, natural solutions.”

Experts in agricultural natural resources praised the vermicompost training for being problem-based and practice-oriented. “Vermicompost improves soil fertility and enhances water retention capacity, which are essential solutions for our region’s land degradation challenges. We have gained significant knowledge from this training,” they stated.

The experts focused on producing vermicompost to improve soil fertility, emphasizing the training’s significant relevance to local environmental conditions.
