Seed Production and Business Management Training Commences at Haramaya University

A training program on Seed Production and Business Management for key actors in Ethiopia’s seed sector has begun at Haramaya University’s Main Campus.

The two-week training, running from December 20, 2024, to January 4, 2025, will feature lectures and discussions on various aspects of seed production, including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats within the sector.

Dr. Yiheyis Bogale

Organized by Haramaya University in collaboration with the SWR Ethiopia Ethiopian Seed Partnership (ESP) project, the training aims to address critical challenges facing the Ethiopian seed sector. Dr. Yiheyis Bogale, Director of the Registrar Office and delegate of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, emphasized the vital role of high-quality seeds in achieving food security and agricultural growth.

“Ethiopia possesses immense potential in its seed sector,” Dr. Yiheyis stated. “However, current challenges include limited access to improved seeds for many crops and insufficient seed supply to meet national demand.”

He highlighted the need for interventions such as developing new crop varieties, strengthening the capacity of seed value chain actors, and fostering collaboration among institutions. Dr. Yiheyis emphasized that training programs like this are crucial for bridging knowledge gaps and equipping the sector to effectively serve the needs of Ethiopian farmers.

Dr. Mulugeta Diro

Dr. Mulugeta Diro, Country Representative Delegate for Stichting Wageningen Ethiopia (SWR), delivered a keynote speech on behalf of the ESP project.

A total of 20 professionals from key seed sector organizations across Ethiopia are participating in the training.
