Haramaya University Model school Celebrated International Women’s Day on March 19/2022 aiming at creating and enhancing a spirit of “I can!” in female students by showing the experiences of successful female teachers.
This event was attended by female teachers, students and staff members who have been assigned various roles in the school.
In the program, Dr. Meseret Girma, a lecturer and researcher at Haramaya University, Department of Animal Science, has shared her life experiences with female students and teachers. Dr. Meseret said that she reached her present status starting from a diploma level. According to Dr. Meseret, even though females are under social, economic and biological pressure, they can realize their dreams if they work hard and use their time wisely.
Mr. Feyisa Bedada, the School Director, the program was designed to enable female students to learn from the experience of women who could achieve their goals, so students should share the best experiences of Dr. Meseret and follow her tracks to fulfill their goals. It is equally important to share the experience of such successful women for future success. So that female students can get advices and share experiences from their female teachers to reach their goals, our school has selected a female representative from the teachers to help and encourage them. Beyond todays’ celebration of the women’s day and creating opportunity to students to share experience, the school is always ready to facilitate females’ hard work to their future success and goal, told us Mr. Feyisa.
The experience of Dr. Mesert is thought to have its own drops of impact to fight against forced marriage in the surrounding community. Concerning forced marriage, Mrs. Halima Reba, a teacher and females’ representative at Haramaya University Model School, said that there are various problems at school and in the area; most female students drop out of school when they reach 8th grade to 12th grade. As soon as they drop out of school, they get married without knowing their husband and with no interest to marry. Then their marriage ends up soon by divorce. Finally, they face social, economic, and psychological problems.
“The preparation of the program is important as it helps female students to achieve their goals by sharing the best experiences from their teachers and other successful women,” appreciated Mrs. Elsa Seyoum, a teacher and a woman club representative for Haramaya University Model School.
Finally, Kenaket Milkesa, grade 6th Student, in her turn, said, “We female students need to study hard by paying attention to our education and not wasting our time on useless things and believing that nothing will stop us from succeeding with our endeavor. Thanks to the school and the organizers, we have gained a lot of experience from the event.”
