Haramaya University Students Explore Diplomacy and Global Refugee Crisis in Model UN Simulation

The United Nations Association Ethiopia Haramaya University Chapter (UNAE-HUC) successfully hosted its first-ever Model United Nations (MUN) simulation and panel discussion on “Next Generation Diplomacy” and “The Global Refugee Crisis” from February 7-9, 2025, at the university’s Main Campus Resource Center.

The panel discussion on “Next Generation Diplomacy: Empowering University Students to Lead Global Conversation” and “The Global Refugee Crisis: Finding Sustainable Solutions for Displacement” featured prominent experts: Professor Biruk Hailu (Political Science and International Relations, Addis Ababa University), Ambassador Sileshi Umer (Public Diplomat and Social Entrepreneur), and Mr. Delil Workicho (AU-Youth Diplomat).

Dr. Richard Wintzel, Dean of the College of Law at Haramaya University, emphasized the university’s commitment to developing future leaders and diplomats. He highlighted the importance of such discussions in providing students with a deeper understanding of these complex issues and preparing them to represent Ethiopia on the world stage.

Dr. Richard Wintzel Explore Diplomacy and Global Refugee Crisis in Model UN SimulationWinta Zerabrook, a 5th-year law student and UNAE-HUC president, explained that the event sought to inspire students to generate solutions to global challenges, cultivate diplomatic and problem-solving skills, and provide a platform for high school and university students to engage in international affairs. She noted the enthusiastic participation and positive feedback, confirming that the MUN simulation will become an annual event.

The simulation provided students with practical experience in diplomacy, fostering critical thinking, public speaking, and collaboration.

The closing ceremony recognized outstanding delegates with awards for Best Delegate, Honorable Mentions, Best Diplomat, and Best Position Paper.

Winners received certificates and valuable opportunities for further development, including attendance at the Leadership Competition Conference , On-Job Training internships, Executive Leadership Masterclass training, and the Light Leadership and Entrepreneurship Academy at Safe Light Initiative in Addis Ababa.
