Haramaya University Launches In-House Workshop to Revamp PhD Curriculum in Environmental Sciences

On April 2, 2025, Haramaya University’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences hosted an in-house curriculum review workshop aimed at enhancing its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Environmental Sciences. This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to producing highly qualified professionals capable of addressing urgent environmental challenges.

Building on this commitment, Dr. Meseret Amde, Director of the Academic Programs Directorate and delegate for the Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivered the opening speech, highlighting the university’s strategic focus on strengthening its postgraduate programs. He noted that this commitment emphasizes the need for rigorous, relevant, and innovative academic offerings that respond to both national and global challenges. The PhD in Environmental Sciences, he explained, is crucial for equipping scholars with advanced knowledge and research skills to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and sustainable resource management.

In support of this vision, Dr.Wesagne, Deputy Dean of the College, added that developed countries like China place significant emphasis on environmental science experts. He emphasized that establishing this PhD program in Ethiopia will not only attract the interest of developed nations but also support environmental conservation efforts through well-trained professionals. He assured attendees that the college is diligently working to make the program functional by incorporating feedback from reviewers and workshop participants.

Additionally, Dr.Tessema Toru, a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Natural Resources Management and Environmental Science, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the university in developing the curriculum. He stated that the team is actively contributing constructive ideas and feedback to ensure the program effectively conserves, guides, and manages the environment.

The workshop was attended by reviewers, senior staff, and invited guests, all united in the goal of refining the PhD curriculum to better serve the needs of the environment and society.
