Haramaya University recently convened a significant public lecture focused on the critical tenets of diplomacy and foreign relations.

Dr. Jemal Yousuf at Public Lecture on Diplomacy and Foreign RelationsDr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University, emphasized the rationale behind hosting the event. “This public lecture was organized to foster a deeper understanding and support for Ethiopia’s diplomatic endeavors and foreign relations policy, particularly within the East African context, among our university community.”

He further elaborated on the strategic importance of exposing students to the insights of seasoned diplomats and scholars. “As our graduates embark on careers that may involve various responsibilities and diplomatic roles, this lecture provides invaluable experience and perspectives from those actively shaping Ethiopia’s engagement with the world.”

Dr. Jemal also highlighted Haramaya University’s proactive role in fostering regional ties through educational and health diplomacy. He noted the significant number of students from neighboring Sudan and Somaliland pursuing undergraduate studies at the university, alongside postgraduate students from other African nations benefiting from scholarships. “These international students, upon returning to their home countries, become de facto ambassadors, carrying a positive image of Ethiopia,” Dr. Jemal stated.

He stressed the diplomats’ and foreign relations experts’ collective assertion that safeguarding national interests demands a commitment to truth and factual information, devoid of personal opinions, emotional responses, and political biases.

Ambassador Dina Muftih Adding practical insights, Ambassador Dr. Towfiq Abdullahi and Ambassador Dina Muftih addressed the audience on crucial aspects of diplomacy and foreign relations, including the historical context and inherent rights concerning Ethiopia’s access to the sea.

Ambassador Dr. Towfiq Abdullahi specifically discussed the strategic significance of a sea outlet for Ethiopia and explored peaceful avenues for the nation to secure maritime access and corridors.

Pineil Abeya,Student Pineil Abeya, Chairperson of the Haramaya University Law College Student Association and leader of the UN ET Haramaya University Chapter, affirmed the lecture’s profound impact on aspiring professionals in the field. “The experience gained from this session has significantly enhanced the understanding of students who aspire to work in diplomacy and foreign relations.”
