Haramaya University Hosts Capacity Building Training on Gender Issues and Legal Frameworks

Haramaya University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH), in collaboration with the Females Academicians and Leaders Network, successfully conducted a capacity building training on “Gender Issues and Legal Frameworks” at the university’s Resource Center.

The training aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of core gender principles and relevant legal frameworks, fostering a more equitable and inclusive academic and professional environment.

The event, held on March 20, 2025, featured expert presentations from gender studies specialists, legal practitioners, and female academic leaders. Participants engaged in interactive discussions focused on practical strategies for implementing gender-sensitive practices across diverse sectors.

In his opening address, Dr. Mohammed Hasen, Dean of CSSH, emphasized the fundamental importance of gender equality as a human right and a cornerstone of a thriving community. He acknowledged the persistent gender disparities globally and highlighted the training’s role in equipping participants with the necessary knowledge and tools to drive meaningful change.

“This session aims to deepen our understanding of basic gender concepts and legal frameworks, enabling us to apply these insights effectively in our daily work,” Dr. Mohammed stated.

Dr. Garkebo Basha, Director of the Academic Assessment and Quality Assurance Directorate, delivered the closing remarks, stressing the critical role of gender mainstreaming in institutional practices. He underscored the importance of integrating a gender perspective into policies, programs, and projects to ensure fairness and opportunity for all.

“Through presentations and discussions, we explored crucial topics related to inclusivity, equality, and respect, with a focus on gender auditing,” Dr. Garkebo noted. He further urged participants to apply the acquired knowledge in career planning, entrepreneurial endeavors, and presentation skills.

The training included active participation from attendees, who engaged in reflective exercises and provided valuable feedback.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the comprehensive content and interactive delivery, noting that the knowledge gained would empower them to champion gender mainstreaming and drive positive change.

The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging participants to apply the insights and experiences gained to promote inclusivity and gender mainstreaming in their respective fields.
