Haramaya University Confers the Rank of Professorship to Dr. Mitiku Eshetu Guya

Haramaya University’s Administrative Board awards the rank of full Professorship in Livestock Production to Dr. Mitiku Eshetu, on February 19/2022.

Mitiku Eshetu (PhD) is a senior faculty member of Haramaya University. He was born on 27 December, 1973 in Sire District of Arsi Zone. He attended his primary education at Lode Makisegno Primary School and his secondary educations at Sire Senior Secondary School. In December 1991, he joined the then Awassa College of Agriculture chartered under Addis Ababa University and graduated with Diploma in Animal and Range Sciences in October 1993. In March 1994, he was recruited by Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, and he served as Junior Livestock Expert in Gimbo District of Keffa Zone for two and half years. Then, in September 1996, he joined Haramaya University as an advanced standing student and graduated with BSc degree in Animal Science in July 1999. Soon After graduation, he was hired at Haramaya University as Graduate Assistant I. After serving for two years as Graduate Assistant I and II, he joined School of Graduate Studies of Haramaya University and earned MSc degree in Animal Production in July 2003. Between January 2008 and November 2010, Mitiku Eshetu attended his PhD study and obtained his PhD degree in Livestock Production and Management, with two minors (Livestock Product Technology – minor 1 and Social Sciences – Minor 2) from GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), India.

Dr. Mitiku Eshetu worked for Haramaya University as a graduate assistant, lecturer, assistant professor and associate professor for over 20 years. This provided him with the opportunity to enhance his academic career.

During this period, he has been teaching various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In 2013 Dr. Mitiku Eshetu received research scholarship at University of Copenhagen, Denmak, for 3 months and attended practice-oriented training on Dairy Product Technologies.

Dr. Mitiku Eshetu has so far supervised 60 MSc and 9 PhD students to the successful completion of their theses and dissertations respectively. He also served as an external examiner for 20 MSc students from other Ethiopian universities. Dr. Mitiku’s research expertise and academic interests span across broader issues of Animal Science fields, mainly focusing on dairy and meat animal production, and dairy and meat technologies. Since 2010 to date, he has published 55 articles in reputable international and national journals, 5 proceedings and conference papers. His other professional services include active involvement as an anonymous reviewer of many articles submitted for publication in international and local journals.

Dr. Mitiku has held various administrative positions during his tenure at Haramaya University: Head of School of Animal and Range Science, Department Research Coordinator, Small Ruminant Research Coordinator, Director for University-Industry Linkage and Entrepreneurship Development and South Coordinator and principal investigator (PI) for Danish Government Sponsored mega project called “Haramaya Camel Dairy”.
