Haramaya University, in collaboration with the SWR Ethiopia ESP project, recently conducted a comprehensive training program for seed professionals from across the country.
The initiative, which ran from December 20, 2024, to January 4, 2025, aimed to address the critical need for skilled professionals in Ethiopia’s dynamic seed sector.
The training brought together 20 participants from diverse backgrounds, including public and private seed producers, agricultural research institutions, Haramaya University, and cooperatives.
The program focused on enhancing their knowledge and skills in various aspects of seed production and business management.
“This training is crucial for the development of Ethiopia’s seed industry,” stated Mr. Amare Kebede, a coordinator of the training and a lecturer at Haramaya University. “By equipping professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge, we can contribute significantly to improving seed quality and availability, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity and food security.”
Dr. Wesagn Berhane, Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, emphasized the importance of seed independence and security for Ethiopia. “A robust seed sector is vital for our nation’s sovereignty and resilience,” Dr. Wesagn stated. “This training has provided participants with the tools to navigate the complexities of the seed industry and contribute to our collective agricultural goals.”
Professor Mengstu Urge, Vice President for Academic Affairs, commended the program for fostering a skilled workforce and its potential to drive Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation. He emphasized the program’s significance in ensuring food security for the nation.
The trainees expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Haramaya University, a renowned institution with extensive expertise in agricultural research. They expressed confidence that the knowledge and skills gained during the training would significantly enhance their careers and contribute to the growth of the Ethiopian seed sector.
This training program serves as a significant step towards strengthening Ethiopia’s seed industry and ensuring a sustainable and food-secure future for the nation.
