Haramaya University Conducts Grant Writing and Management Training to Bolster Research Capacity
Haramaya University recently organized a two-day training workshop on “Grant Writing and Management” for its academic staff and researchers.
The training was designed to empower faculty members with the competitive edge needed to design high-impact research projects, thereby accelerating the university’s development goals. This initiative is particularly timely as Haramaya University prepares for its transition to Autonomous status, a shift that demands diversified income sources and heightened professional competencies among its staff.
During the session, the training coordinator, Dr. Dinaol Belina, highlighted a significant shift in the university’s research strategy. He noted that while researchers previously sought funding through isolated, individual efforts, the establishment of a dedicated directorate now fosters a more collaborative environment.
The current framework allows experienced scholars to share their expertise with early-career researchers,” Dr. Dinaol stated. “By working in teams, our staff can more effectively identify and secure project opportunities that benefit the entire institution.
The importance of the workshop was further echoed by Dr. Sileshi Deme, Dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. With more than 20 faculty members from his college in attendance, Dr. Sileshi emphasized that the training is vital for translating academic knowledge into practical solutions.
Winning research grants is about more than just funding; it is about bringing resources into the university to conduct research that solves pressing local and national problems, Dr. Sileshi remarked.
One of the trainer Professor Abi Tadesse, who guided participants through the intricacies of the grant lifecycle. The curriculum focused on leveraging existing academic experience to draft winning proposals and, crucially, managing those grants once they are awarded. Professor Abi explained that creating awareness about the post-award management process is essential for maintaining institutional credibility and ensuring project longevity.
Participants, expressed that the workshop provided them with a clear roadmap for navigating the competitive world of international and domestic grants. Many noted that they now feel better equipped to contribute to the university’s mission and are ready to play their part in the institution’s upcoming Diamond Jubilee milestones.
