Haramaya University Concludes Induction Training for 62 Academic Staff.
The Coordinating Office of the Higher Diploma Program (HDP) at Haramaya University’s College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CEBS), in collaboration with the Office of the Academic Vice President, successfully conducted an extensive induction training for newly hired and reinstated academic staff.

The training took place from October 15 to October 31, 2024, across both the Main and HIT Campuses. A total of 62 academic staff members participated, with 34 from the Main Campus and 28 from the Haramaya Institute of Technology (HIT) Campus.

This intensive program was designed to equip new instructors with the essential knowledge and skills necessary for effective teaching in higher education. According to Mr. Zenebe Aboset, the training coordinator, the primary goals were to raise awareness of the major theoretical foundations of teaching and learning (pedagogy), share practical experiences from seasoned instructors, enhance knowledge and skills in the teaching profession, and familiarize trainees with the University’s vision, mission, physical environment, and key services, including ICT.

In his address, Dr. Tasew Mezgebu, Dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, emphasized the professional responsibilities of the participants. “We learn a lot from your devotion, commitment, punctuality, and professional respect,” Dr. Tasew stated, highlighting that effective teaching involves transferring knowledge, attitudes, and skills, thereby fostering economic, cultural, moral, social, and democratic citizenship within a nation.

Dr. Tasew further noted that the training is crucial in helping teachers acquire necessary pedagogical skills, enabling them to become “adaptive experts” prepared for continuous lifelong learning. He stressed the importance of not only having a deep knowledge of the subject matter but also understanding various pedagogical approaches and how students learn, to ensure the long-term quality of teaching and professional development.

Participants provided positive feedback regarding the training’s impact. Mr. Yeshiwas, one attendee, remarked that the training was “very essential for the learning and teaching method” and would help new teachers effectively transfer their knowledge and skills to their students. In a similar vein, Dr. Abdisa commented that the program helped them acquire the skills needed to produce qualified citizens through improved pedagogical practices.

At the conclusion of the 16-day training, all participants were awarded certificates. certificates.
