Haramaya University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) conducted an internal curriculum review workshop on one PhD and four Master’s programs from October 1- 2, 2021 at the University’s Resource Center.
Prof. Adem Hiko, Dean of College of Veterinary Medicine, welcomed the participants of the workshop and said Haramaya University officially established as Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in October 2003 with the aim of training skilled manpower in veterinary medical profession and provide services for community.
In 2012, the College established three postgraduate programs (MSc. in Veterinary Epidemiology, Veterinary Public Health and Veterinary Microbiology), it was indicated.
In 2018, in addition to its regular Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), the College started to teach Veterinary Laboratory Technology (VLT) programs.
Prof. Adem added that the College is currently working vigorously and expanded its training programs at different levels in various areas of veterinary medicine specialization and related science to meet emerging societal needs and contributes in transforming Haramaya University to research University.
To fill the professional gap in the country, the College is striving to further diversify postgraduate programs with objectives of producing skillful professionals in different specialization areas and made internal curriculum reviews in PhD in Food Safety and Zoonosis, MSc. in Veterinary Parasitology; MSc. in Veterinary Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as MSc in Veterinary Surgery and MSc in Farm Animal Medicine.
Dr. Tesfaye Lemma, Vice President for Research Affairs of Haramaya University, on his opening speech thanked and appreciated all the concerns and contributions of the reviewers.
The College of Veterinary Medicine is creating skilled and competent human power required for the transformation of the country by providing high quality education, research, and outreach services in the fields of Veterinary Medicine, Dr Tesfaye said.
Dr.Yilfashewa Seyoum, Director of Academic Programs of Haramaya University, on his closing speech thanked and appreciated the efforts of the presenters of the programs and reviewers as well as members of the Curricula Committee.
He said the workshop has provided varieties of exchanges of ideas, knowledge and skills in the area of the academic program. Curriculum development is one of the major task and also one of the most challenging areas, he added.
Dr.Yilfashewa said we that the achievement is not only a step forward in post- graduate specialization development initiatives, but also to be very valuable to overall sector of higher education.
The curricula must be designed to ensure that they fit the mission of the university, have potential for excellence and strong intellectual leadership. In designing new programs, key issues should not be underemphasized. Among these include essential knowledge, skills, and integrity Dr. Yilfashewa added.
The workshop was attended by invited guests from Haramaya University’s different colleges.
After the internal reviewers’ presentations, various reflections and discussions were made by participants of the review workshop for enrichment.
The curricula are expected to be presented in national workshop there after to HU’s sent and MoSHE. It will be implemented in the beginning of February 2022 or by next academic year.
