Haramaya University Launches RUFORUM Leadership Training for Management Team
Haramaya University launched a two-day leadership and governance training program today for its management team, organized by the RUFORUM TAGDEV 2.0 project.

This RUFORUM TAGDEV 2.0 project initiative marks a milestone in building institutional excellence and advancing Africa’s higher education transformation.

The training equips Haramaya University’s management with leadership and governance skills tailored to African higher education contexts. Participants will examine best practices from across the continent, foster open idea-sharing, and adapt strategies to the university’s unique academic units and colleges.

Dr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University, stated in his opening speech: “Leadership is not just a position; it is a practice. Governance is not merely a structure; it is a culture.” He emphasized that continuous learning and collaboration remain essential for institutional growth, adding that such training advances these goals.

RUFORUM’s two-decade partnership with Haramaya University delivers significant value through postgraduate training, research development, regional mobility, and innovation ecosystems. The TAGDEV 2.0 project specifically funds the “Smallholder Agro-Food System Transformation along the Potato Value Chain,” supporting 25 PhD students, two master’s candidates, and ARIHUB facilities. This collaboration secures international funding, boosts research output, and aligns the university with Africa’s agricultural agenda, enhancing competitiveness and global relevance. As Dr. Jemal remarked: “RUFORUM has grown with us, challenged us, and amplified our capabilities.”

The training advances Haramaya University’s goals of greater autonomy, responsiveness, and innovation amid evolving higher education demands. The President stressed full engagement, stating: “The strength of Haramaya University lies in the collective wisdom and commitment of its leaders. When we grow, the institution grows.” Participants pledged to apply these insights toward stronger leadership, trustworthy governance, and sustained academic excellence.
