Haramaya University Ignites STEM Passion with Successful Mathematics Olympiad

Haramaya University recently hosted a dynamic Mathematics Olympiad, bringing together eight secondary schools to foster excellence in science and mathematics.

This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to enhancing educational quality and supporting students in critical STEM fields.

Dr. Yisahak Yusuf, Vice President of Research and Community Engagement, highlighted the university’s broad engagement in improving education, health, and infrastructure, emphasizing their dedication to nurturing future scientists and mathematicians.

Dr. Henok Desalegn

Dr. Henok Desalegn, Coordinator of the STEM Center, noted the Olympiad is part of a larger effort to boost the acceptance and understanding of mathematics education in the country, following awareness campaigns that reached 500 students in the participating schools.

The competition saw enthusiastic participation from Haramaya University Special Non-Boarding School, Haramaya University Model School, Haramaya, Bate, Aweday, Adele, Hamaresa, and Harar Secondary Schools. Dr. Getnet Alemayehu, who presented an awareness-raising research paper, stressed the importance of increasing participation in the international Mathematical Olympiad, particularly on the continent where awareness remains low

In the 9th grade, Fuad Abdusalam from Bate Secondary School came in 1st place, Anwar Ali from Haramaya University Special Non-Boarding Secondary School came in 2nd place, and Absra Geda from Haramaya Secondary School came in 3rd place.

The 10th grade contestants were 1st Fitsim Israel from Haramaya University Special Non-Boarding Secondary School, 2nd Sudsi Kedir from Haramaya Secondary School, 3rd Sumaya Aman from Harar Secondary School; From the 11th grade, 1st Demesa Usmael from Haramaya Secondary School, 2nd Barudin Kemal from Haramaya University Special Non-Boarding Secondary School, and 3rd Bilal Jamal from Haramaya Secondary School were awarded prizes.

Haramaya University Special Non-Boarding School came first with three students in all three grades, Haramaya Secondary School came second with two students, and Bate Secondary School came third with one student.

The event concluded with a strong message of encouragement for students to pursue their passions in STEM, promising continued support from Haramaya University.
