Students’ Graduation Ceremony Held

Haramaya University conducted its 68th graduation ceremony on February 25, 2024, at Afran Kallo Hall, conferring degrees upon more than 600 students during the second round of the ceremony.

The graduation ceremony consisted of students who completed undergraduate, specialty, Masters, and doctoral programs.78 graduates have master’s degrees in health professions, with 17 specialties and 6 sub-specialties. In total, 151 of the graduates are women.

The graduation ceremony was attended by the State Minister of Health, Dr. Ayele Teshome, Federal and regional government officials and other universities from neighboring countries representatives, senior government officials, University officials, elders and Aba Gadaa, alumni families, and other guests. 

Haramaya University’s College of Health and Medical Sciences Chief Executive Director Dr. Ahmed Mohommed said that the university has been able to educate and graduate more than nine thousand students in the field of health and medicine to fulfill its mission.

As part of the university’s efforts to strengthen educational diplomatic relations with neighboring countries, it has enrolled 118 students from Somaliland, Puntland, South Sudan, and Djibouti in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

According to Professor Mengistu Urge, the Academic Affairs Vice President and delegate of Haramaya University’s President, the university is currently teaching over 26,000 students in various fields of study. Among these students, 363 have graduated in the first degree in health, 78 in the second degree, 17 in a specialty, and 6 in a sub-specialty. Additionally, one student has graduated with a third degree.

The total number of students was 640, with 102 graduating in business, public administration, and information technology fields, and the rest in medical science.

During his explanation, it was mentioned that some of the graduates had transferred from Mekele University to Haramaya University to complete their studies.

The guest of honor at the ceremony, State Minister of Health Dr. Ayele Teshome, mentioned that there are ongoing efforts to provide medical and health services to all citizens at a national level. These efforts aim to meet the demand for these services and ensure that everyone can access them. He mentioned that Haramaya University is fulfilling its obligation of producing educated human resources. Graduated students should fulfill their professional duties.

At the event, graduates who achieved high results were awarded gold medals and trophies. The awards were presented by several notable guests, including State Minister of Health Dr. Ayele Teshome, Haramaya University Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof. Emana Getu, medical chiropractic expert and Haramaya University board member Dr. Salam Aklilu, Mayor of Maya City and Haramaya University board member Dr. Efrah Wazir, and Harari Regional State Vice President and Haramaya University Hiwot Fana Specialized Teaching Hospital board member Mrs. Roza Umer.

The graduates have shared their eagerness to utilize the skills they have newly acquired, to serve their country. Among the graduates, Fenet Ahmed received the gold medal and trophy for her exceptional performance. She has expressed her dedication to her profession and serving society with sincerity, using the skills she has acquired.

Dr. Rahma Aishum, an urogynecology specialist, dedicates herself to considering the challenges faced by mothers and women in healthcare.
