International disabilities Day ’which is celebrated in many countries around the world is a day when disabilities are recognized without discrimination is marked at  Haramaya University at HIV/AIDS Resource Center in the Main Campus.

The university has commemorated the international day of persons with disabilities with a theme “full participation and equality” through various events.

Mrs. Emebet Belete, Director of the University’s Gender, HIV/AIDS and Special Needs mainstreaming Directorate, in her welcoming speech has noted that persons with disability often face various forms of barriers almost in all aspects of societal life, expressed through social discrimination and which gradually lets them not enjoy equal access to services.

She said persons with disability can play their own role and be more efficient and competitive in all areas of development. According to Emebet, the resilience and perseverance of persons with disability to learn and face problems in uncomfortable environment can attest their hard work.

The disabled Academic staffs also expressed their feeling of happiness at the occasion. The occasion was colored by different entertaining programs like poems, question and answer competitions among students on issues related to disability.

The program of the day ended by awarding prizes to those who participated in different activities of this occasion.
