Haramaya University has announced its preparation to admit students for the Doctorate Degree in Public Health (DrPH) program.


The university, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has launched the first Doctorate Degree in Public Health program in the country.

The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program, which is the first of its kind in many African countries, will be offered at Haramaya University starting in the coming semester. This program, which focuses on practical research to solve public health problems, will enable students to learn how to manage public health issues effectively.


Haramaya University, in addition to its known contribution, has been working on producing competent professionals and leaders by giving special attention to the health sector. The university’s College of Health and Medical Sciences Chief Executive Director, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed, has spoken about this.


Dr. Ahmed revealed that the implementation guide for the Doctorate program, which is different from other educational programs, has been prepared by focusing on practical research. He also stated that Haramaya University will be the first to introduce this program in East Africa.


Haramaya University has been preparing for the past five years to launch this program and is currently working on producing competent researchers and leaders by focusing on the health sector. The university’s College of Health and Medical Sciences Chief Executive Director, Dr. Ahmed, has discussed this initiative.


Haramaya University, to fill the leadership gap in our country’s health institutions, has prepared a doctoral program in Public Health and has invited both internal and external candidates to comment on the draft curriculum. The program is designed to ensure that the health sector leaders in the institutions are expected to be trained. The College of Health and Medical Sciences Academic and Research Director, Mr. Addisu Alemu, has confirmed that students will soon be admitted.


Haramaya University, in addition to its 46 postgraduate programs, has launched a Doctorate in Public Health program. The university’s journey to self-governance and becoming a research center of excellence has been furthered by the addition of this program. The university’s Postgraduate Directorate Director, Dr. Feyera Dinsa, has announced that the program will produce competent scholars who can contribute to the health sector in our country and beyond, particularly in East Africa.


The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program is not available in many African countries, but it will contribute to the prevention and control of diseases in the country by training scholars. This program focuses primarily on where most of the population receives health services and allows students to learn practical research to solve public health problems. The program was prepared and added after many ups and downs, and its commencement in our country will take the health sector one step forward, according to the Health Minister’s Human Resource Development Chief Executive Leader, Mr Assegid Samuel.

As Mr. Assegid explained, the health sector requires a lot of attention and can be managed with adequate knowledge and skill if public health is taught at the doctoral level (Doctor of Public Health (DrPH)). He said that the Ministry of Health is working in collaboration with universities to launch this program, which is necessary to solve the problems in the health sector and to train leaders who can bring about change.

Professor Yemane Berhane, the Director of Addis Continental Institute of Public Health, is a well-known public health scholar in our country. He recently announced that they have finally succeeded in starting a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program after several years of unsuccessful attempts. Haramaya University has agreed to host the program and senior experts in the field will provide the necessary support for its success. The program aims to address the management bottlenecks in the health sector and improve overall healthcare in the country.

Dr. Lemesa Oljira, a lecturer and practitioner of public health at Haramaya University, has confirmed that the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) education focuses on the areas where most of the population receives health services. This program is designed to equip students with practical research skills to solve public health problems. In this process, students will solve health service delivery problems and train change-making leaders, as confirmed by Dr. Lemesa.

Mr. Behailu Hawelat, the Head of Haramaya University’s School of Public Health, has stated that the university has been preparing for the launch of a new program for the past five years. He expressed his gratitude to all the stakeholders who have contributed to the preparation and addition of the program.

Mr. Behailu announced that they are preparing to admit students who pass the National Postgraduate Entrance Exam (GAT) set by the Ministry of Education.

There is high interest and demand for information about the new program in the health sector. Therefore, stakeholders involved in the preparation expect full participation in the implementation process.

Similarly, Addis Ababa University is also preparing to launch this program.
