Haramaya University Boosts Agricultural Innovation with Field Day
Haramaya University’s Office of the Vice President for Research and Community Engagement recently hosted a field day from October 30 to November 1, 2024, to showcase the institution’s cutting-edge research and technology transfer initiatives.
The event, held in selected woredas of the East Hararghe Zone, brought together farmers, stakeholders, and researchers to discuss and share insights on agricultural innovation and problem-solving solutions.
Dr. Yisahak Yusuf, Vice President of Research and Community Engagement, emphasized the University’s commitment to addressing the region’s agricultural challenges. “We are focused on developing and deploying climate-resilient crop varieties that can withstand drought and disease,” he said. “By conducting research in our centers, training stations, and directly in farmers’ fields, we are working to improve crop yields and ensure food security.”
The field day provided a platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building. Researchers and extension workers shared insights on the latest agricultural technologies, including improved seed varieties, efficient irrigation techniques, and integrated pest management strategies. Farmers had the opportunity to learn from experts and share their experiences with fellow farmers.
Local administrators, including Mrs. Sozit Mohammad and Mr. Ergamo Usmano, expressed their appreciation for Haramaya University’s contributions to the community. They highlighted the importance of collaboration between the University, government agencies, and farmers in addressing agricultural challenges.
Farmers who participated in the field day were impressed by the practical applications of the University’s research. They shared stories of increased yields, improved crop quality, and reduced reliance on chemical inputs.
“We are grateful for the support of Haramaya University,” said Fasika Tasew, a farmer from Kurfa Kebele Farmers Association. “The new technologies we have learned about are helping us to adapt to climate change and improve our livelihoods.”
By fostering innovation, promoting sustainable practices, and empowering farmers, Haramaya University is playing a crucial role in shaping the future of agriculture in the region.
