Haramaya University and FAO Partner to Boost Food Security
Haramaya University has agreed to work with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to enhance food security in Ethiopia.
The partnership seeks to utilize the university’s research expertise to enhance community agricultural production, nutrition, and food accessibility.
Dr. Yishak Yusuf, Vice President of Research and Community Engagement at Haramaya University, emphasized that this collaboration strengthens an existing relationship and will facilitate joint efforts to transform agricultural production into nutritious food for the community.
Maya Hajali, Head of the Better Nutrition Group and Policy Officer at FAO Ethiopia emphasized the significant contributions of researchers and experts from Haramaya University. She mentioned that the partnership will concentrate on conducting high-quality research, surveys, and assessments related to food security, including fruit production and other pertinent areas.
Douglas Mkunda, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of FAO Ethiopia, emphasized the project’s focus on gathering evidence, informing policy decisions, and creating a positive impact on both private and public institutions.
Daniel Alemu, a Food Science lecturer at the Haramaya University Institute of Technology and a participant in the meeting, explained that the agreement will enhance the university’s efforts to improve the food system. This will involve conducting research, developing agricultural technologies and improved seed varieties, and increasing the community’s access to a diverse range of nutritious foods.
Haramaya University and the FAO Ethiopia office presented their profiles and experiences on the issue, followed by a discussion on collaboration.
