Haramaya University Signs Strategic Multi-Institutional MoU to Advance Research and Innovation
Haramaya University has entered into a significant multi-institutional Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Shaggar Institute of Technology (SIT), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Oromia Science and Technology Authority. The agreement marks an important step toward strengthening collaborative efforts in education, research, and technological innovation, in alignment with Ethiopia’s national development priorities.

The partnership is designed to foster impactful academic and research collaboration, with a particular focus on capacity building, knowledge exchange, and the co-development of innovative solutions to address pressing societal challenges.

During the signing ceremony, Dr. Berhanu Bulcha highlighted the strategic value of building partnerships that directly contribute to national goals. He emphasized the role of youth empowerment, student mobility programs, and collaborative research in preparing a new generation of scientists and engineers capable of driving sustainable development.

Representing the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Professor William Vizuete, Innovation Strategy Advisor at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, expressed strong interest in expanding collaboration with partner institutions. He noted opportunities for joint development of air quality models across Africa, contributing to global environmental research, as well as advancing sensor technologies to enhance data collection and analytical capabilities.


Dr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University, underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in strengthening digital infrastructure, facilitating technology transfer, and expanding academic exchange programs. He further emphasized the value of leveraging international networks to co-develop research initiatives that address critical community and national challenges.

This collaboration reflects Haramaya University’s continued commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and global engagement, positioning the institution as a key contributor to Ethiopia’s transformation agenda.
