Haramaya University Donates Agricultural Machinery to Local Seed Producers Associations

Haramaya University, in partnership with the Ethiopia-Netherlands Seed Partnership, has donated agricultural machinery worth over 2.5 million birr to six local seed-producing associations across four districts.

Muslima Yuya from Meta District and Abdul Fattah Dawud from Chinaksen District said the equipment would streamline operations
The equipment includes three tractor-driven threshing machines capable of processing various crops, five digital scales, and five seed maturity testing devices. These tools will enable the associations to produce higher-quality seeds using modern technology.

Professor Mengistu Urge Ethiopia-Netherlands Seed Partnership
Professor Mengistu Urgie, Haramaya University’s vice president for academic affairs, highlighted the limitations of traditional harvesting methods during the handover ceremony. “In our country, crops are typically harvested using animal hooves and human labor with sticks, leading to seed breakage and reduced quality that hampers farmers’ production and productivity,” he said. “These modern machines will boost the associations’ capacity to deliver unbroken, high-quality seeds, ultimately enhancing farmers’ yields.”

Dr Mohamed
Dr. Mohamed Hassan, coordinator of the Ethiopia-Netherlands Seed Partnership, emphasized the initiative’s focus on quality seed production, multiplication, and distribution. “By supporting these associations, we ensure farmers receive superior seeds, playing a vital role in boosting agricultural output,” he stated.

Dr. Mohamed added that the advanced technology will strengthen the country’s human capital development, increase seed production, and provide climate-adapted varieties to local farmers.

Mr. Kemal Kasim
Mr. Kemal Kasim, the university’s director for community engagement and industry linkage, noted the economic benefits. “These machines will help the associations produce premium seeds, sell them at better prices, and increase their income,” he said. The donation targets associations in four districts for shared use as needed.

Representatives from the beneficiary associations expressed gratitude. Muslima Yuya from Meta District and Abdul Fattah Dawud from Chinaksen District said the equipment would streamline operations, improve seed quality for farmers, and boost their earnings. They thanked Haramaya University for providing such cutting-edge support.
