Haramaya University Elevates Global Dialogue on Climate Change and Women’s Empowerment
Haramaya University made a substantial contribution to the global climate change discourse by participating in the COP29 climate change conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Mr. Mohammed Aman Ogeto, an Assistant Professor and PhD Research Fellow at the university, represented Haramaya University in a joint panel discussion titled “Cultivating Change: How University Collaboration Can Support Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Research.”
The panel discussion, hosted by the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), a strategic partner of Haramaya University, brought together high-level officials, researchers, and policymakers to explore innovative solutions to address climate change challenges and promote gender equality.
The successful participation at COP29 has paved the way for further collaborations between Haramaya University and international institutions. UAEU has expressed its intention to visit Haramaya University in January 2025 to solidify their partnership and explore new avenues of cooperation.
Moreover, Mr. Mohammed initiated collaborations with several renowned organizations, including the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), the OPEC Fund for International Development, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These partnerships will enable Haramaya University to contribute to groundbreaking research, capacity building, and sustainable development initiatives.
The university’s significant contributions to the global climate change discourse were recognized with an award at the COP29 conference. This recognition underscores Haramaya University’s commitment to addressing global challenges and its role as a leading institution in higher education and research.
The event was attended by higher officials including Sheikha Dr. Moza bint Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan (Adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Prof. Ahmed Murad Associate Provost for Research (United Arab Emirates University) and other invited guests from governmental, private, NGOs and international development organizations.
