To pave the way for this landmark agreement, a consultative workshop was held at the Haramaya University Training Center, bringing together institutional leaders, researchers, and international representatives.

Reflecting on the historical ties between the two institutions, the President of Haramaya University, Dr. Jemal Yousuf, highlighted that this partnership is approaching its tenth anniversary. Over the past decade, the two universities have successfully executed two major large-scale projects and are currently implementing their third collaborative initiative.

Dr. Jemal stated that this upcoming agreement is a natural evolution of their decade-long partnership, noting that the main focus is shifting heavily toward institutionalizing food safety and advancing public health outcomes.

The core objective of the new partnership centers on enhancing human and animal food safety. Specifically, the collaborative efforts will focus on devising scientific, evidence-based mitigation strategies to combat the significant health risks posed by aflatoxins and pesticide chemical residues within the food supply chain.

In a major institutional development, Dr. Jemal announced that advanced preparations are underway to establish a specialized center dedicated to the One Health approach, which recognizes the deep interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. The new institution has already been legally registered in the State of Florida and will soon enter full operations once administrative processes with Haramaya University are completed.

To solidify the operational roadmap, a separate delegation of experts from the University of Florida is scheduled to arrive in Addis Ababa this coming Sunday to collaborate with university leadership on drafting a comprehensive Five-Year Strategic Plan. Following the initial sessions in the capital, the expert team will travel directly to the main campus of Haramaya University.

Addressing systemic healthcare challenges, Dr. Jemal noted that Haramaya University is actively working to curb the brain drain of medical professionals who frequently leave for the private sector. The university plans to leverage this new partnership to restructure its teaching hospital into an enterprise model, a shift designed to ensure efficient, high-quality, and agile healthcare delivery to the community while establishing a competitive, merit-based compensation structure to reward and retain skilled medical professionals.
