Professor Gebisa Ejeta Inspires African Youth to Drive Continental Transformation Through Education and Innovation

Haramaya University proudly hosted the renowned plant breeder and World Food Prize laureate, Professor Gebisa Ejeta, who delivered an inspiring lecture encouraging African youth to embrace education, innovation, and creativity as the driving forces behind Africa’s transformation.

Speaking on the theme “African Youth for Africa’s Transformation,” Professor Ejeta emphasized that the continent’s future rests on the shoulders of its young people. “African youth must educate themselves to claim their rightful role in Africa’s transformation,” he declared, underscoring the importance of human capital development.

Professor Gebisa highlighted that Africa’s growth and prosperity depend on harnessing creativity, innovation, and managerial skills. He pointed to global examples, including the United States, Europe, the Asian Tigers, and BRICS nations, as economies propelled by science, technology, and innovation.

“Africa’s youth, numbering over 400 million aged 15–35, must be empowered through education and equipped with technology and creativity to solve both local and global challenges,” he stated.

Drawing from his personal experiences, Professor Gebisa encouraged students to pursue excellence through discipline and hard work. He shared his formula for success from his time at Haramaya University: “I focused on my studies, managed my time effectively, took on extra jobs at the university, and earned additional income. I also played basketball for recreation. Overall, I used my time productively to achieve results.”

The event began with remarks from Dr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University, who expressed deep appreciation: “Our distinguished Professor Gebisa Ejeta generously shares his life lessons with our community to inspire Africa’s transformation. We thank him sincerely.”

In recognition of his contributions, Haramaya University honored Professor Gebisa by naming its library after him. During his visit on December 30, 2025, Professor Gebisa and his family pledged to enhance the library’s facilities. “This library is crucial for producing qualified citizens. Together with my family, we will work to improve it,” he affirmed.

Mr. Tilahun Shiferaw, the Director of the University Library and Information Service, announced the launch of a digital exhibit that highlights Professor Ejeta’s impressive life and career achievements. The exhibit features over 260 publications, prestigious awards, including honors from the World Food Program, a former U.S. President, and Purdue University, as well as a rich collection of photographs that document his journey.
