Biotech for Africa Symposium Spotlights Emerging Solutions for Food Safety

Egerton University in Kenya hosted the Biotech for Africa Symposium from November 12–14, 2025, bringing together scientists, policymakers, and development partners to explore advancements in agricultural biotechnology across the continent.

Dr. Abdi Mohammed, Vice President for Administration and Development at Haramaya University and an active researcher in food safety, represented the institution at the event.

Dr Abdi delivered a presentation titled “Mycotoxins in the Ethiopian Food System: Current Burden and Emerging Biotechnology as a Solution,” highlighting the scale of mycotoxin contamination in Ethiopia and outlining biotechnology-driven interventions with the potential to reduce risks across the food value chain.

The symposium was funded by the USDA Agricultural Research Service (USDA–ARS) through Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), USA.


It is part of the broader Biotechnology Advocacy Project, “Establishing Sustainable Networks of Next-Generation Change Agents in Agricultural Biotechnology and Biosafety to Enhance Knowledge and Awareness in Africa,” which aims to build capacity and strengthen regional collaboration in biotechnology and biosafety.
