Haramaya University and University of Florida Join Forces to Advance Cancer Control in Ethiopia.
Haramaya University, in partnership with the University of Florida (USA), recently convened the “Ethiopia Cancer Implementation Science Symposium” at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa, signaling a significant push towards strengthening cancer control efforts in the nation. The impactful two-day event took place from May 12 to 13, 2025.
Spearheaded by Dr. Tara Wilfong and her team within the College of Health and Medical Sciences at Haramaya University, the symposium was a collaborative endeavor with the University of Florida, USA. The event drew together a diverse group of experts and presenters from prominent institutions.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Abdi Mohammed conveyed a welcoming message on behalf of Dr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University, underscoring the institution’s commitment to addressing critical health challenges.
Dr. Deribachew Bakan, Research Affairs Director at Haramaya University, delivered a compelling presentation on the “Importance of Partnership in Cancer Control” within developing countries like Ethiopia. He emphasized the tangible benefits that strategic collaborations have already brought to the university, enhancing both its capabilities and its standing within the research community.
The symposium fostered a crucial dialogue, uniting representatives from Addis Ababa University, the American Cancer Society, Mount Kenya University, the University of Minnesota (USA), Georgetown University, and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. These key partners share a unified vision of bolstering collaborative strategies to effectively combat cancer in developing nations such as Ethiopia, with a strong emphasis on practical implementation and future directions.
