The convening was held on August 27, 2024, at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, DC, with a theme “Animal Source Foods for Change: Cognition, Climate, and Capacity.”

The aim of the convening is to discuss future research for development priorities for strengthening livestock systems and supporting animal source foods consumption in lower and middle-income countries. The specific objectives of the event were to discuss research approaches and impact pathways to improve human health and nutrition outcomes through sustainable livestock systems under conditions of a changing climate, and to explore how priorities for livestock systems and animal source foods consumption-related food systems research supported by USAID and other donors are evolving.

Dr. Jemal Yousuf, President of Haramaya University and Co-Principal Investigator of two projects implemented in collaboration with the University of Florida, was a panel member addressing the topic of “Capacity: Strengthening Local Capacity – An Example of LSIL’s Collaboration with Haramaya University.”

Invitees of the evnet include USAID staff and other funders (such the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Eleanor Crook Foundation, World Bank) along with technical experts from the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems/University of Florida, the International Livestock Research Institute (co-host), International Food Policy Research Institute, as well as the United States Department of Agriculture.
