Under the Rapid Groundwater Resource Mapping (RGWRM) Project, Haramaya University has received state-of-the-art hydro-geophysical groundwater assessment equipment valued at USD $107,267.55, generously provided by Aarhus University (Denmark), as explained by the project coordinator Dr. Asfaw Kebede.

The RGWRM project aims to integrate modern geophysical technologies into Ethiopia’s water sector to enhance the identification, monitoring, and sustainable management of groundwater resources. By strengthening human, organizational, and institutional capacities, the project also contributes to climate-resilient water resources management across the country.

As part of its implementation, the project will conduct geophysical surveys in Eastern Hararghe (Haramaya Lake Watershed), Harari, and Dire Dawa areas. These surveys will generate vital data to inform water management decisions and support long-term groundwater sustainability.

Modern Innovative Hydro-Geophysical Groundwater Assessment Equipment

The newly received equipment will be used for training and research activities from January 2025 to December 2029, helping to build the technical capacity of students, researchers, and water sector professionals. In addition, the equipment will strengthen community service activities of the university by improving the identification of groundwater potential zones and recharge areas.

This advanced technology is expected to significantly enhance the accuracy and efficiency of groundwater exploration and geophysical mapping, positioning Haramaya University as a national hub for modern groundwater research and innovation
