Goal of the Program:

  • The goal of the program is to produce high level professionals in the fields of Special Needs and Education that would play a leading role in caring out research, teaching and community services.

Program objectives:

The objectives of the program are to produce qualified professionals who can:

    • analyze critically the contemporary issues of education within the national and global contexts;
    • teach responsibly in different higher institutions;
    • advise policy makers on national educational problems and issues;
    • develop curriculum and instructional materials for different levels of educational institutions;
    • evaluate the educational policy at national and international levels;
    • design educational programs on the bases of human development, individual difference and diversity;
    • Undertake research and development projects on educational issues from the national and global perspectives; and lead educational institutions at various levels.

Professional profiles

The prominent tasks of the professionals in the field of education are:

  • conducting research and innovation,
  • providing guidance and consultancy services,
  • leading education offices and similar organizations,
  • managing change,
  • rendering high quality service in teaching, training and apprenticeship,
  • participating actively in the development of educational policies and programs, and
  • Managing diversity.

Admission Requirements

 

Applicants who fulfill the following requirements will be eligible for PhD in Education (Inclusive Education Stream) of Department of Special Needs and Inclusive Education, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, Haramaya University:

  • Applicants with MA or MEd in special needs and inclusive education, psychology, curriculum studies, adult education, comparative education, educational administration, educational planning and management, educational leadership and school leadership.
  • Applicants from curriculum studies, fields of psychology, comparative education and educational leadership, management and administration who have not taken adequate major courses in special needs and inclusive education expected to attend bridging courses which will be decided by the DGC, Department Postgraduate council. The intake of applicants based on this criterion will depend on the capacity of department and will be determined during admission. In addition, relatedness to the stream of interest will account for 10%.
  • Applicants who scored a minimum of 3.25 CGPA at the master level and 75 at the undergraduate level. Applicants who scored a minimum of ‘good’ or B+ grade in their master level thesis.
  • Applicants who can submit a written statement of career goals, research interests/ synopsis, and academic objectives.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of three years work experience in related areas after obtaining his/her Masters.
  • Applicants who can provide at least two academic references and one from employers.
  • Applicants must sit for a written entrance exam and score at least 60%.
  • Applicants must attend interview and demonstrate their English language proficiency in relation to their career goals, research interests, and academic objectives.
  • Applicants who can fulfill the other requirements of Haramaya University.

Graduation Requirements

  • A Minimum of 3.00 in CGPA for course works and no ‘C’ in any course
  • A pass grade in Dissertation/Thesis examination.
  • Fulfill other Haramaya University graduation requirements.

Duration of the Program

The duration of the program shall be 4 years. However, with unanticipated situations, the program may be extended to additional six months at the request of the candidate and with the discretion of the Department Postgraduate council.  

Degree Nomenclature

The degree to be awarded shall be PhD in Education (Doctor of Philosophy in Education) and the specialization will be indicated in brackets as follows.

In English: PhD in Education (Inclusive education)
