Background

Tony farm research station of Haramaya University is located in the Dire Dawa city, Eastern Ethiopia, 43km far away from the main campus. The station covers about 34 hectares of land. It was serving as fruits and vegetable research station since 1972. It has a vision to become a center of excellence for research works in drought resistance fruits and vegetable research center in Ethiopia. The station is located 9o36’44.1’’ N latitude and 41o50’28.9’’ E longitude and at altitude of 1150 meter above sea level. The station receives annual rainfall of 594 mm. The mean temperature of the station is 25.23 °C with average maximum and minimum temperatures of 31.17 °C and 18.98 °C, respectively. The soil of the experimental site is a well-drained deep alluvial with a sub-soil stratified with sandy clay loam. The center has 80 permanent workers to facilitate and support the research undertaking in the research station which covers more than 30 hectares of land.
