The training was provided in two phases and involved the participation of 37 healthcare providers.

Haramaya University Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital installed vital medical equipment and trained professionals on their utilization. Also, ICU experts were sent to Garamulata General Hospital for capacity building, and 26 healthcare providers received ICU training on care and machine utilization.

Garamulata hospital documented a significant drop in Neonatal death and referral after these interventions. And five of the trainees were attached to Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital’s ICU for one week and received additional training. Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital also maintained the medical equipment of Garamulata General Hospital, including the installation of two mechanical ventilators.

Dr Abdi Amin, Medical Director of Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, explained that many patients referred to the hospital arrived in critical condition after traveling long distances and that the hospital had saved many lives despite staff and resource shortages. However, many precious lives are lost due to preventable causes and the high unmet needs for intensive care services, including mechanical ventilators, in this part of the country.
