1.  PhD in Education (Curriculum Studies)

1.1. Goal of the Program

The goal of the program is to produce high level professionals in the fields of Education that would play a leading role in caring out research, teaching and community services.

1.2. Program objectives

The objectives of the program are to produce qualified professionals who can:

  • analyze critically the contemporary issues of education within the national and global contexts;
  • teach responsibly in different higher institutions;
  • advise policy makers on national educational problems and issues;
  • develop curriculum and instructional materials for different levels of educational institutions;
  • evaluate the educational policy at national and international levels;
  • design educational programs on the bases of human development, individual difference and diversity;
  • undertake research and development projects on educational issues from the national and global perspectives; and
  • lead educational institutions at various levels.

1.3. Professional profiles

The prominent tasks of the professionals in the field of education are:

  • conducting research and innovation,
  • providing guidance and consultancy services,
  • leading education offices and similar organizations, managing change,
  • rendering high quality service in teaching, training and apprenticeship,
  • participating actively in the development of educational policies and programs, and managing diversity.

At the end of the program, the graduate is expected to have the following profiles

1.5. Admission Requirements

Applicants who fulfill the following requirements will be eligible for any one of the four streams of PhD in Education of Haramaya University, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences:

  • Applicants with MA or MEd in education, curriculum studies, psychology, special needs and inclusive education, adult education, comparative education, educational administration, educational planning and management, educational leadership and school leadership.
  • Applicants from curriculum studies, fields of psychology, special needs and inclusive education, comparative education and educational leadership, management and administration who have not taken adequate major courses in his/her selected area of specialization would be expected to attend bridging courses which will be decided by the college graduate program council. The intake of applicants based on this criterion will depend on the capacity of each department and will be determined during admission. In addition, relatedness to the stream of interest will account for 10%.
  • Applicants who scored a minimum of 3.25 CGPA at the master level and 75 at the undergraduate level. Applicants who scored a minimum of ‘good’ or B+ grade in their master level thesis.
  • Applicants who can submit a written statement of career goals, research interests/ synopsis, and academic objectives.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of three years’ work experience in related areas after obtaining his/her Masters.
  • Applicants who can provide at least two academic references and one from employers.
  • Applicants must sit for a written entrance exam and score at least 60%.
  • Applicants must attend interview and demonstrate their English language proficiency in relation to their career goals, research interests, and academic objectives.
  • Applicants who can fulfill the other requirements of Haramaya University.

1.6. Graduation Requirements

  • A Minimum of 3.00 in CGPA for course works and no ‘C’ in any course
  • A pass grade in Dissertation/Thesis examination.
  • Fulfill other Haramaya University graduation requirements

2. PhD in Adult and Non-forma Education

2.1. Program Goals

The goal of the program is to produce high level professionals in the fields of Education that would play a vital role in conducting leading-edge research, teaching and community services. More importantly, the proposed program aimed at producing adult education professionals and community development agents, leaders and researchers at the highest level.

2.2. Program Objectives

The program objectives include;

  • Produce well-trained skilled manpower in adult education and community development for the growing demand of several socio- economic and political sectors;
  • Analyze critically the contemporary issues of adult and non-formal education within the national and global perspectives;
  • Produce professionals who teach adult education courses responsibly in different higher institutions;
  • Train competent high-level professionals capable of taking up positions at the highest level in the public, civil society and private sectors;
  • Produce trained human power who can advise policy makers on national educational problems and issues;
  • Lay foundation to develop and review for adult education curriculum and related instructional materials for different levels of educational institutions;
  • Produce professionals who can conduct research and development projects on educational issues from the national and global perspectives; and
  • Create professionals who are able to face the challenges of contemporary and future highly complex and competitive environments;
  • Produce adult education and community development experts who can initiate and nurture change, innovations and development by addressing local and regional needs and realities as well as managing resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Train practitioners who can review adult education policies and strategies at local, national, and international levels;

2.3. Professional Profile

The major tasks of the professionals in the field of adult and non-formal education are:

  • Undertake adult and non-formal education related research and innovation,
  • Provide guidance and consultancy services in adult and non-formal education,
  • Lead adult education offices and similar organizations,
  • Manage properly change during crises in the sector of adult and non-formal education,
  • Debate on contemporary education and training policies Vs. practices
  • Provide high quality service in teaching, training and apprenticeship in the sector of ANFE,
  • Participate actively in the development of ANFE policies and programs,
  • Devise strategies to manage diversity and maintain inclusiveness, and ensure lifelong education,
  • Effectively deliver community engagement and service programs related to ANFE.

2.4. Graduate Profile 

At the end of the program, graduates in the field of adult and non-formal education are expected to have the following profiles:

  • Design adult and non-formal teaching & training in HEIs
  • Develop high quality teaching & training materials in the sector of ANFE
  • Value diversity and individual differences in ANFE and training
  • Manage changes in ANFE settings
  • Adapt ANFE philosophies and theories in training and education
  • Review existing policies and directives to envision innovative thinking.

2.5. Admission Requirements

Applicants who fulfill the following requirements will be eligible for PhD in Adult and Non-formal Education:

  • Applicants with MA or MEd in adult education, adult and lifelong learning, adult education and community development, educational psychology, special needs and inclusive education, curriculum studies, comparative education, educational administration, educational planning and management, educational leadership and school leadership. Depending up on relatedness of fields and the decision of Department/School Graduate Council, applicants from other related field of studies can be entertained.
  • Applicants from curriculum studies, educational psychology, special needs and inclusive education, comparative education and educational leadership, management, administration and other related fields, who have not taken adequate major courses in his/her selected in the area of adult and non-formal education are expected to attend bridging courses such as Foundations of Adult Education & Lifelong Learning, Indigenous Knowledge and Skill Training in Adult Education, Adult Education and Community Development Theory and Practice. More courses may also be added depending up on the background of the applicants and to be decided by the Department Graduate Council.
  • The intake of applicants depends up on the capacity of the department.
  • Applicants who scored a minimum of 3.00 CGPA at the master level.
  • Applicants who scored a minimum of ‘good’ or B+ grade in their Masters level thesis.
  • Applicants who can submit a written statement of career goals and research interests/ synopsis.
  • Applicants who have a minimum of two years of work experience in related areas after obtaining his/her Master’s degree.
  • Applicants who can provide at least two academic references.
  • Applicants must sit for entrance exam and score minimum requirements (50 % and above) in their English language proficiency and the related field study (ANFE).
  • Applicants who can fulfill the other requirements of the University Senate legislation.
