1. MA. in Educational Leadership and Management

1.1 Program Goals

To produce competent and capable human power in the areas of Educational Leadership and Management

The graduates of this program will be able to:

  • To offer an integrated program of Educational Management and Leadership.
  • To provide students with Leadership knowledge and Management skills.
  • To allow students act as confident leaders / managers in an academic institute
  • To prepare students for effective organization and administration of schools and education.
  • To prepare training executives who act creatively and productively.
  • To strengthen students’ knowledge and skills in the critical evaluation and analysis in research.
  • To familiarize students with leadership and management models that can be adopted by academic institutes.
  • To provide students with knowledge, attitudes and skills to offer services to the wider educational community.

1. 3 Professional Profile

After a successful completion of the program, the graduates of the Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and Management will be able to:

  • Plan, organize, lead and control educational activities effectively at different levels;
  • Utilize and mobilize resources in education sector;
  • Conduct researches and encourage research works in educational institutions;
  • Assess and evaluate school improvement programs;
  • Promote and facilitate school community partnership;
  • Promote democratic culture in educational institutions;
  • Manage diversities and challenges in educational institutions;
  • Manage information flows and communication with stakeholders;
  • Use educational management information system in planning, implementing, and monitoring and evaluation educational activities;
  • Provide consultancy and supervisory services in the area of educational leadership and management; and
  • Develop, manage and evaluate projects and programs.

1.4 Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the master’s program, the applicant should be:

  • BA or BSc. Degree (or an equivalent degree) in Education, or other related fields from a recognized university

NB: The relevance of other degrees is determined by the Departmental Graduate Committee (DGC).

Educational background of an applicant who are not related with education, and far apart from field of education shall expected to take at least the following bridge courses

  • Introduction to educational management
  • Management of change and innovation
  • Introduction to education leadership
  • Resources management in education
  • Taken pedagogical /professional/ courses during undergraduate or post-graduate certificate in teaching,
  • At least a CGPA of 2.00 in the undergraduate study,
  • Teaching, leading and managing educational and related office as an asset,
  • Candidates who have been working in areas of teaching and managing educational institution shall be given priority during selection ,
  • Successfully pass the university’s entrance examination
  • Fulfill other university wide requirements.

NB: Candidates will be selected on a competitive basis; and,

Other things being equal, females will be given priority.

2. MA. in Technical Vocational Education and Training

2.1 Goal of the Program

  • To produce TVET leaders who have technical knowledge and vocational skills and can give training and consultation services to the production of craftsmen, technicians and other skilled personnel who will be entrepreneurs and self-reliant;
  • To produce TVET leaders who can address educational gaps and solve existing problems through critical analysis of educational institutions’ environment (political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological);
  • To produce change oriented and professional committed instructors, and junior researcher in TVET leadership.
  • To produce competent TVET leaders and supervisors who can handle management responsibilities under the context of changing environment and decentralized educational system that can mobilize and involve the local communities on TVET institutions and thereby strengthen all stakeholders

2.2 Professional Profile

After a successful completion of the program, the graduates of the Master's in Leadership in Technical and Vocational Education and Training will be able to:

  • Lead and manage technical vocational education and training institutions effectively ;
  • Apply leadership and management theories and principles in working environment
  • Properly monitor and evaluate employees in technical vocational education and training institutions Introduce innovative strategies and apply technological tools that can enhance the teaching and learning process in academic institutions
  • Solve existing program by conducting research and suggest possible solutions for improvement and betterment the field TVET leadership.

2.3 Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the master’s program, applicant should:

  1. Have BA or BSc. Degree (or an equivalent degree) in Education/Vocational Education or other related fields from a recognized university/TVET College

NB: The relevance of other degrees is determined by the Departmental Graduate Committee (DGC).

Educational background of an applicant who is not directly related with educational leadership /technical vocational education and far apart from the field shall be expected to take at least the following bridge courses with 8 Cr.Hrs.

  1. Introduction to Educational Management
  2. Resources Management in Education
  3. Theories and Models of Leadership
  1. Scored at least a CGPA of 2.00 in the undergraduate study.
  2. Have been working in areas of teaching and managing in education and TVET institutions shall be given priority during selection.
  3. Successfully passed entrance examination.
  4. Fulfilled other university wide requirements.
  5. Female’s applicants will be given priority.

3. MA.  in School Leadership

3.1 Goal of the Program

The objectives of the MA degree in School leadership Program are to prepare principals who are able to:

  • Develop school vision, long and short-terms plans, school improvement programs and projects, and innovative  and  feasible  interventions  on  the  teaching-learning  process through the involvement of the school community;
  • Lead teaching and learning activities in schools through proper implementation of school curricula and adaptation of teaching practices that foster and promote collegial learning and better student outcomes;
  • Manage effectively and efficiently various school resources (physical, financial, and human)
  • so that they impact teachers’ practices and students’ learning outcomes;
  • Supervise and manage curriculum, instructional activities, and assessment;
  • Coordinate and mobilize school community to enhance their commitment in enacting the visions of schools and improve learning outcomes;
  • Develop and follow  up  teachers’  professional  learning  and  growth,  and  nurture  an atmosphere  of  collegial  and  collaborative  school  culture  that  strives  for  continuous improvement and excellence;
  • Manage School policies through initiating innovations and change
  • Design appropriate instructional practices, in collaboration with the teachers, to enhance students’ learning outcomes through proper monitoring and assessment of students’ performance in school, cluster, regional and national examinations;
  • Engage in continuous improvement and professional development activities through reflecting on one’s practic
  • Conduct researches focused on resolving school-wide problems so as to enhance student learnin

3.2 Admission Requirements

School principals would be the first beneficiaries of the training. It is indicated in the revised Blue Print that the acquisition of a School Leadership position would be based on academic and leadership merit. So, teachers who have served for five and more years can apply for the position.

The following criteria will be employing in selecting candidates for the School Leadership program:

  • MA/MSc/MEd holders, BSc/BA/BEd + PGDT holders, (Degree in EdPM and subject area + PGDSL are advantageous)
  • Five years of teaching experience in a government school;
  • Potential to serve as a school leader, and the commitment to work as a school leader for a reasonable number of years; unit leadership, department headship also advantageous;
  • More than 75 % in performance evaluation during the semesters;
  • Age 48;
  • Females and teachers with disabilities %;
  • A pass in the entrance exam (minimum of 50 %) prepared by the universities which offer the pro

The following be applied:

  •  University GPA = 40%
  • Performance Evaluation over the latest three semesters = 40%
  • Experience in teaching or as a school principal = 20 %. (Experience of 10 years or above will attract the full 20 %. The remaining will get according to their service years g. 5 years will earn 10 %.).

4. MA. in Educational Information and Communication Management

4.1 Program Objectives  

The program is designed to produce competent graduates who can manage educational information and communication in the context of change and decentralized educational system is in practice.

Specifically, the objective of the program in Educational Information and communication Management are to:

  • Produce professionals who can generate, organize, analyze, provide reliable quality data and information in the education system
  • Prepare those can manage and utilize educational data and information effectively and efficiently
  • Equip students with skills to manage teams in developing and supporting information systems
  • Enable students to disseminate data and information defectively and efficiently
  • Produce students who promote educational information and communication system at various levels
  • Produce students who enhance the quality and efficiency of educational information management,
  • Challenge students to identify organizational opportunities that can be enhanced utilization of information technology and system in the education system.
  • Develop professionals who can improve the quality of data and information in the education system
  • Enable students to design various aspects of information systems, including programming, database, communication and human interface components in relation to its application in the education system.
  • Prepare students who are capable of solving educational problems related to information management by applying skills of educational research.
  • Provide knowledge and skill in educational planning
  • Enable students to undertake educational research to strengthen the ties in information, planning, and practice, and
  • Provide consultancy services in the area of planning and educational information management

After completing the program, the graduates of EICM will have the following profiles:

  • Provide support for policy makers and planners which leads to making sound decision on educational issues

  • Conduct research in the field of study to improve the quality of education using sound information management
  • Consult to Schools, District Education office, Regional education Bureaus, CoC, TVET and other NGOs working on Education

4.4 Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the MA degree program in Educational Information and Communication Management System should fulfil the following criteria:

  • First degree in related studies from an accredited university or college. The relevance of the degrees is determined by the Departmental Graduate Committee (DGC).
