Background
In Eastern Ethiopia, the demand for quality certified seeds is increasing due to the strong awareness that has been implemented in the last 12 years. In this regard, Haramaya University is making a significant and successful effort to develop the seed system and stimulate the domestic seed business by working with agricultural research centers, farmers cooperatives union, primary cooperatives, and seed development entrepreneurs in the eastern part of the country.
Vision
In the coming ten years, the vision for seed quality control centers directorate is to be forefront in ensuring the integrity and purity of seeds. This center directorate aim to implement strong seed quality management practices that are critical for maintaining a seed variety's trueness to type, which is essential for market acceptance and use. With advancements in technology and a focus on national and international standards, this center directorate will play a pivotal role in supporting sustainable agriculture and food security.
Mission
Provide efficient seed testing and certification services to public and private seed producers and processors. Facilitating policy dialogue on the development of seed systems. To solve the problem of seed quality in our country and ensure sustainable change.
Aims
- The overall objective of the Haramaya University Seed Quality Control and Certification Center Directorate is to increase food security and economic growth by contributing to the availability of quality seeds at affordable prices on time for producers in eastern Ethiopia.
- Providing field inspection, seed quality testing and certification services to producers and processors.
- Carrying out demand-driven capacity building activities related to seed quality assurance through awareness creation, knowledge sharing and training.
- To facilitate stakeholder discussion on seed laws, standards and regulations.
- To promote good practices and innovations for quality seed production, processing, storage and distribution.
- Support services for networking with seed value chain actors and exchange of knowledge and resources.
- To create strong linkage and active follow-up of seed producing cooperatives with their respective unions, facilitating the coordination, communication, and regular testing of seed samples.
- To scale up the best practices of some seed producing cooperatives with others, sharing their experiences, challenges and solutions in seed production.
- To monitor and regulate the direct seed marketing activities of the seed producing cooperatives and ensure compliance with the standards and regulations.
- To provide seed certification and tags for the approved seeds and facilitate their distribution and marketing on time.
- To establish crops seed banks for local and improved seeds and empower farmers to access and use them.
- To produce and target high-value crops, forage and vegetable seeds with high demand and potential.
- To promote cluster farming, good agricultural practices, and awareness creation on the problems of striga infestation, desert locusts and policy advocacy on their management.
- To exercise “precision agriculture” by using modern technologies such as agricultural drones and remote sensing to optimize crop production and quality control.
- In general, the center directorate is designed to meet the needs and expectations of farmers, consumers, regulators, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
