Background

Rare Crop Research Stations served for several research, technology demonstration and extension station since the establishment of the university. It is 5.1 km far from Haramaya city. Rare research station covers more than 10 hectares of land. The station has several sub-stations including crop research site, protected research site (greenhouse, glasshouse, and lath house), nursery site, farm management and floriculture site. The site is located 9o24’53.5’’ N latitude and 42o02’08.7’’ E longitude and at altitude of 2000 meter above sea level. The station receives annual rainfall of 880 mm with bimodal rain distribution. The mean temperature of the station is 17 °C with average maximum and minimum temperatures of 23.10 °C and 10.89 °C, respectively. The soil of the experimental site is a well-drained deep alluvial with a sub-soil stratified with sandy clay loam. The station has 45 permanent workers which are involved in the facilitation and support of the research activities in the research station.
