Admission Requirements

  • degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences or MD and DVM degree from recognized University. All candidates must have a minimum CGPA of 2.0 and above at graduation.
  • An Applicant ought to prove that he/she has financial sources (sponsorship) to pursue the study program
  • Applicants will be accepted by the department of MLS based on the recommendation forwarded by the Haramaya University School of Graduate Studies (HU-SGS) Admission guidelines.
  • Applicants satisfying the admission requirements are required to sit for entrance examination. The examination encompasses written and oral examinations.
    • Written exam: 85%
    • Oral exam: 15%

Duration of the study

The duration of the study program is two years. The first year is dedicated for course work and the remaining one year is set aside for research work. However, under special circumstances, the duration of the study may be extended up on the discretion of Departmental Graduate Council (DGC) and final approval of SGS of the Haramaya University.

Graduation requirements

In order to graduate with Master of Science in Medical Microbiology, students must:

  • Complete all the required courses for the program.
  • Achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.00 with only one C, but no          D, F or I (incomplete) grades.
  • Pass thesis defense and satisfy the general requirements of the School of Graduate Studies of Haramaya University.

Admission Requirements

Candidates eligible for admission in to the masters of Science degree in Tropical and infectious diseases shall have any of the following minimum qualifications

  • Holders of bachelor of medical laboratory science, public health officer, environmental health, pharmacy, nursing, doctor of medicine and veterinary medicine from a recognized university; or
  • Holder of bachelor of science in biology from recognized university with at least two years of work experience in medical research or in disease prevention and control; or
  • All candidates must have a minimum CGPA of 2.0 and above at graduation

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants who have BSc. degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical doctor, Zoology, Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from recognized governmental higher institutions who took at least three credit hours in parasitology courses in his/her under graduate study.
  • Applicants who have B. degree in other Medical/ Health professionals from recognized governmental higher institutions can apply if they are willing to take some basic Medical Laboratory and related courses given to undergraduate Medical Laboratory Sciences students. The eligibility of the applicant’s educational background will be decided by DGC.
  • Applicants graduated from accredited private higher institutions could also join the program based on the Sub –Article: 100.2.1.1.
  • Applicants should have a minimum of two years of related work experience and their age shouldn’t be more than 50 years old.
  • An applicant ought to prove that he/she has financial sources (sponsorship) to pursue the study program.
  • Applicants will be accepted by the school based on the decision forwarded by Post graduate Program Directorate admission guidelines.
  • Priorities is given for female applicants and from less developed regions based on sub-article 100.1.6 in case screening is a must from two or more competing applicants.
  • Applicants should be mentally healthy to fit the program
  • Special admissions like applicants with minor physical problems that would not hinder effective teaching should be considered into the school based on Article 100; sub-article100.1.6. However, any student with visual problem and problem in manipulation of laboratory equipment using his/her both hands should not be selected to join the program.
  • All applicants should pass the entrance exam given by the school.
  • Applicants satisfying the admission requirements are required to sit for entrance examination. The examination encompasses written (85%) and oral (15%) examinations.
  • Each applicant must score at least 50% to join the program. But maximum intake of the eligible applicants will be determined using proposed intake plan of each year and the accommodation capability of the school based on their score of ranking. If two applicants are scored equal marks their CGPA in undergraduate program will take in consideration to join the track.
  • Exemption/waiver of course is considered according to sub-Article of 100.2.3.

 Bridging courses (if applicants are from other disciplines)

Applicants from other health/ medical sciences could also apply to the program if they are willing to take some basic medical laboratory and related courses given to undergraduate Medical Laboratory Sciences students. The courses are medical parasitology-I, Vector biology, Introduction Medical Laboratory Sciences for other health/medical sciences applicant and. Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Medical Parasitology-I, Vector biology, Introduction Medical Laboratory Sciences for Biology and Zoology applicants. The applicant should take this course with undergraduate Medical Laboratory Sciences students and expected to complete within a year of the first-year program both in the first and second semesters.

Duration of the study

The MSc in Medical parasitology program is a research-based two years for regular students and 3 years for non-regular students (CEP in weekend and summer students). The modality of the delivery of the courses will be block based. The first year for regular and two years for non-regular (particularly for summer) students is dedicated for course work. While the remaining one year for regular and non-regular students is set aside for clinical lab attachment and research work. However, under special circumstances, the duration of the study may be extended for one year up on the discretion of School Graduate Council (SGC) and final approval of PGDP of the HU.

The duration of the study program is two years for regular students and 3 years for non-regular students (summer and CEP students). The common courses will be provided at once for all the specialty Streams in Year I, Semester I. The students will go to their specialty Streams in year I semester II and onwards. The first year is dedicated for course work and the remaining one year is set aside for clinical attachment and research work. However, under special circumstances, the duration of the study may be extended for one year up on the discretion of School Graduate Council (SGC) and final approval of PGDP of the HU.

Graduation requirements

In order to graduate with Master of Science in Laboratory Leadership and Quality Assurance, students must:

  • Complete all the required courses for the program.
  • Achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.00. No more than 1C or 2C+s according to the article 127.1.3 of HrU senate legislation.
  • Pass thesis defense and satisfy the general requirements of the PGDP of HrU
