Admission Requirements for School of Pharmacy
Pharm program admission requirements:
Admission requirements will be as per the University Senate Legislation
The University shall admit for undergraduate studies:
- Students who have completed Ethiopian high school education and satisfy its entrance qualification assessments.
- Applicants with foreign high school education of equivalent level to the Ethiopian high school education, as determined by the Ministry of Education, and who satisfy entrance requirements
- Considering the extensive practical attachments of the program, students with major disabilities (vision, mobility and hearing-related problems or those who cannot effectively use both hands) shall not be admitted
- Requests for transfer from other departments/disciplines shall be handled based on the relevant university regulation/senate legislation
Special Admission
Special admissions may be granted to attract potentially resourceful candidates such as mature students. Such special admissions shall be decided based on relevant university specific legislations and guidelines in line with the National direction.
Post-basic Pharmacy program admission Requirements:
The admission requirements for the Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy include:
- Students who have completed Level IV Pharmacy and passed certificate of competency (COC) exam
- Currently working in profession related working areas
- At least 2 years of work experiences
- Those who can pass Entrance Exam prepared by the respective universities
- Clinical pharmacy admission requirements
- Hold B. Pharm degree with the minimum of cGPA of 2.00 from a recognized College/ University and with a minimum of one year relevant work experience.
- Hold B. Pharm degree with an acceptable professional conduct proven by two academic or managerial references.
- Pass entrance examination (more than 50%). Intake capacity should also be considered during the admission.
- The candidate should fulfill the minimum requirement of Haramaya University as stated in senate legislation for postgraduate program.
- Pharmacology admission requirements
A candidate must have earned Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM), Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), as well as a candidate with Bachelor degree in pharmacology or toxicology from recognized college and university. A candidate who satisfies the above admission requirement will be required to take and pass written and oral examination. Candidates, who have not taken undergraduate courses in pharmacology, toxicology, physiology and biochemistry with the scope of the curriculum in B.Pharm or MD, will be required to take and pass examinations in these courses before being allowed to take specialty courses. Candidates are required to meet all the requirements set by the HrU SenateLegislation. In case if many candidates exceed the minimum requirement set by the department in entrance examination, the priority will be given for the top scoring candidates.

Admission Requirements for School of Nursing and Midwifery
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Midwifery, and Psychiatry field studies with thesis.
- Good academic record in master’s program (CGPA ≥3.0 & pass mark & B grade in thesis defense).
- Application letter with CV, motivation statement, sponsorship letter, and 3 letters of reference/recommendations from immediate supervisors, and colleagues.
- Concept note with brief research gaps/statement of the problems, objectives, summary of methods, and references that identify concentration area.
- Those students who will join this Ph.D. program withan MSc in Midwifery, Psychiatry nursing and BSc in Nursing, Midwifery, Psychiatry with an MSc in health sciences related fields of study should audit Theoretical & Conceptual Foundation in Nursing course with masters’ students in Nursing.
Program admission requirement (eligibility) for compressive nursing
- Candidates must be natural science students in secondary school & preparatory classes and full fill the following criteria
- Semester two year-one student from natural science students
- Meet the set criteria of the Ministry of Education for degree students to join a higher learning institution
- Physically and mentally fit for nursing service
- Preferably, those who choose to enter the profession
Program admission requirement (eligibility) for generic midwifery
- Admissions to all regular undergraduate programs are processed through the Ministry of Education and have customarily students with natural science backgrounds and medically fit. Given the importance of having valid evidence-based, comprehensive, and fair student selection criteria, it is recommended that Universities develop a defensible guideline. In addition to academic achievement, a literature review by Bore and his colleagues suggests using a combination of informed self-selection, general cognitive ability testing, and aspects of personality and interpersonal communication skills to maximize the probability of making accurate, fair, and defensible selection decisions.The proposed program requirement for the midwifery program could include
- Pass the Midwifery program selection criteria
- Free from a disability that hinders midwifery care provision
- Interested to attend the midwifery program
Program admission requirement (eligibility) for post-basic midwifery
Candidates to this program should have two-year prior service and:
- Diploma certificate in midwifery
- Level IV in midwifery who pass the Certificate of Competency (COC) exam
All candidates should present a supportive letter from their respective organizations. Admissions to the post-basic program will be processed through the University or Ministry of Education.
Program admission requirement (eligibility) for generic pediatrics and child health nursing
Candidates must be natural science students in secondary school & preparatory classes and full
fill in the following criteria
- Meet the set criteria of the Ministry of Education for degree students to join a higher learning
- institution
- Physically and mentally fit for nursing service.
- Preferably, those who choose to enter the profession.
Procedure for Application
- The applicants should apply to the office of the registrar
- The office of the registrar will send the applicants to the department
- The department will select the eligible candidates and notify the office of the registrar which will be approved by the academic commission through the office of the registrar.
- After admission candidates have the right to course drop and add according to the rule of the registrar if they fulfill the prerequisite courses
- Candidate can be exempted from non-professional courses if s/he scored A or B on that specific course
Program admission requirement (eligibility) for post-basic pediatrics and child health nursing
Admission to this post-basic program in pediatrics and child health nursing requires
- Diploma in nursing, midwifery, or a TVET level 4 certificate from a recognized institution
- Must pass & certified with an updated COC examination
- A minimum of 2 years of full-time clinical experience
- Two recommendation letters from the workplace. These may be:
- Both from professionals who are able to attest to the applicant’s professional ability, or

- The applicant must successfully pass the screening process including the entrance exam & interview.

Program admission requirement (eligibility) for post-basic neonatal nursing
Admission to this post-basic program in neonatal nursing requires
- Having a diploma in Nursing or a TVET level 4 clinical nursing, and a diploma in Midwifery or Midwifery Level IV from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of 2 years of work experience in a clinical setting
- Must have a certificate of competence
- The applicant must score at least 50% to pass the mark.

Generic candidates must be natural science students in secondary school and preparatory classes and full fill the following criteria:
- Meet the set criteria of the Ministry of Education for degree students to join a higher learning institution.
- Physically and mentally, fit for nursing service in general and for emergency & critical care services in particular.
- Preferably, those who choose to enter the profession.

Admission to this post-basic program in emergency and critical care nursing requires

- Two recommendation letters from the workplace. These may be:
- Both from professionals who are able to attest to the applicant’s professional ability, or
- One academic and one professional letter of recommendation.
- Applicant must be physically and mentally fit for the profession
- The applicant must successfully pass the screening process including the entrance exam & interview.
- If two candidates score equal results on the above criterion, nurses who were practicing in ICU or emergency room will get priority.
- Sponsorship letter from sponsoring institution
Program admission requirement (eligibility) for Psychiatry
Candidates must be natural science (biology, chemistry, general sciences) students in preparatory classes and fulfill the following criteria;
- Meet the set criteria by the Ministry of Education for degree students to join higher learning institutions.
- Be physically fit (at least the candidate should be physically healthy and capable of undertaking the four techniques of diagnosis of disease in clinical medicine i.e inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation) and not have a hearing problem.
- Female candidates will be encouraged
- Preferably, those who have the interest to choose the profession.
- Hold a BSc degree from a recognized university or college in Nursing.
- Sponsorship letter, CV with application letter, and 3 letters of references/recommendations from immediate supervisors, and colleagues which attested acceptable professional conduct
- A minimum of one year of work experience
- Must pass the entrance exam (written and interview examination) prepared to assess the individual competencies and preparedness to pursue a graduate program
- Candidates must satisfy all requirements set forth by Haramaya University.
- Fulfill common regulations and requirements for a master’s degree at Haramaya University / higher learning institution.
- Have an acceptable earned baccalaureate degree in nursing or midwifery
- A minimum of two years of work experience
- Physically fit for nursing service.
- Must pass the entrance exam by scoring at least 50% of both written and oral examinations prepared to assess the individual’s competencies and preparedness to pursue a graduate program.
- Admission may take place directly for those legally send from a recognized governmental university or college until the recommendation letter was sent from the university or college they attended.
- Graduate of BSc in Comprehensive, Pediatrics, Neonatal Nursing, Emergency and critical care, Medical, Surgical, Psychiatric Nursing, and Midwifery from a recognized college or University with a CGPA of 2.0 and above.
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical or teaching experience after BSc degree.
- A sponsorship letter from sponsoring institution is mandatory. In a situation when Self-sponsor are allowed by HrU legislation, it will be considered according to the university rule and regulations.
- All applicants should submit the necessary academic credentials to the postgraduate/registrar offices in person or online.
- Two recommendation letters. These may be Both from professionals/academics who can attest to the applicant’s professional ability or One academic and one professional letter of recommendation.

- The applicants will be admitted on a competitive basis (when the number of applicants who fulfill the requirements exceeds the intake capacity).

- The minimum admission requirement to join MSc in Clinical Midwifery program will be in accordance with the common regulation and requirements for a Master‟ Degree in Universities / Higher teaching institutions:
- Hold a first degree from an accredited institution in bachelor of science degree in Midwifery with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and above
- At least two years of clinical experience after the BSc award and should have acceptable professional conduct attested by references.
- Must pass the entrance examination prepared to assess the individual‟ competencies and preparedness to pursue a graduate program.
- Have full sponsorship from employing party; excluding self-sponsors.

Admission Requirements for Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences
1. Admission Requirements (for Regular BSC in MLS)
To be admitted to the regular Program, candidates must:
- Meet the set entrance criteria for Higher Education institutions.
- Satisfy the academic rules and regulations of the university.
- Present diploma in Medical Laboratory Technician/Technology/Sciences who meet the admission criteria set by authorized institution. Diploma/advanced diploma/ level IV graduates in Medical Laboratory Sciences, passed certificate of competency (COC) exam and able to pass entry exam of the teaching institution
- Be physically and mentally healthy and fit to the program
- Applicants with minor physical problems that would not hinder effective training should be considered into the school
- However, any student with any visual problem and any problem in manipulation of laboratory equipments using his/her both hands should not be selected to join the school.
- Admission Requirements (Bsc Post Basic Regular Program):
- Who has a diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or completed Level IV in Medical Laboratory Technology and passed the certificate of competency (COC) exam
- A minimum of two years‘ professional work experience
- Who can pass the entrance exam prepared by the respective universities,
- Score at least 50% in the entrance examination
- Present sponsorship letter or release from employing/sponsoring institution.
- Being physically and mentally healthy
- Applicants with minor physical problems which would not hinder effective training and service provision could be considered for enrolment as appropriate
3. Admission Requirements (for summer in service BSC in MLS)
Admission Requirements
Applicants for advanced standing should satisfy the following requirements:
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from recognized institutions.
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 and above at
graduation.
- Recommendations from their respective employers (optional).
- Secured source of fund or self-sponsored.
- Candidate who completed grade 10 and holder of diploma in medical laboratory science/technology and can present COC in the field of study will be considered
Equal opportunities will be given to all interested candidates who meet the admission criteria for the program. However, those applicants:
- coming from hospitals and health centers used as training sites by the college;
- participated in supervision of students at team training sites for a minimum of two years;
- Able to produce recommendations from the Department for their participation in the training of students will be given priority.

Candidates eligible for admission in to the masters of Science degree in Tropical and infectious diseases shall have any of the following minimum qualifications
- Holders of bachelor of medical laboratory science, public health officer, environmental health, pharmacy, nursing, doctor of medicine and veterinary medicine from a recognized university; or
- Holder of bachelor of science in biology from recognized university with at least two years of work experience in medical research or in disease prevention and control; or
- All candidates must have a minimum CGPA of 2.0 and above at graduation
- Applicants satisfying the admission requirements are required to sit for entrance examination. The examination encompasses written and oral examinations.
- Written exam: 85%
- Oral exam: 15%
Each applicant must score at least 50% to join the program. Students will be candidates for the program based on the accommodation capability of the school using their ranking
- Applicants who have BSc. degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical doctor, Zoology, Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from recognized governmental higher institutions who took at least three credit hours in parasitology courses in his/her under graduate study.
- Applicants who have B.Sc. degree in other Medical/ Health professionals from recognized governmental higher institutions can apply if they are willing to take some basic Medical Laboratory and related courses given to undergraduate Medical Laboratory Sciences students. The eligibility of the applicant’s educational background will be decided by DGC.
- Applicants graduated from accredited private higher institutions could also join the program based on the Sub –Article: 100.2.1.1.
- Applicants should have a minimum of two years of related work experience and their age shouldn’t be more than 50 years old.
- An applicant ought to prove that he/she has financial sources (sponsorship) to pursue the study program.
- Applicants will be accepted by the school based on the decision forwarded by Post graduate Program Directorate admission guidelines.
- Priorities is given for female applicants and from less developed regions based on sub-article 100.1.6 in case screening is a must from two or more competing applicants.

- The applicant must submit a letter of sponsorship or secured fund for Private applicants
- The applicant must submit a minimum of two recommendation letters from his/her previous supervisor/instructor (s) during MSc study.
- The applicant must submit a research synopsis not more than 5 (five) pages
- The applicant must meet all of the admission requirements of the Haramaya University as per Article 100, sub article 100.1 and sub article 100.2 .

Admission Requirements for Department of Environmental Health Science
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in environmental health science, Occupational Health and Safety, Public Health, Sanitary Engineering, Water resource Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Technology, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, and other related fields with a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4 or an equivalent from any recognized institution. The entrance exam must be passed with at least 50% scoring commenced in written format.
Applicants will be accepted by the department of environmental health based on the recommendation forwarded by the Haramaya University School of Graduate Studies (SGS) guideline. It is up to the applicant to prove financial requirements (study grant); otherwise needs to be government-sponsored.
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Science; Civil Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Water resource Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Environmental Engineering, Hydraulics, Chemical Engineering, Urban Engineering, Occupational Health, Industrial engineering, Urban Planning, Chemistry, and other related fields with a minimum GPA 2.0 out of 4 or an equivalent from any recognized institution. The entrance exam must be passed with at least 50% scoring commenced in written format. Applicants will be accepted by the department of environmental health based on the recommendation forwarded by the Haramaya University School of Graduate Studies guideline. It is up to the applicant to prove financial requirements otherwise need to be government sponsored.

GPA 2.0 out of 4 or an equivalent from any recognized institution. The applicant must score a minimum of 50% of the entrance exam to be accepted for admission. Applicants must provide at least two letters of recommendation from their employers and academic supervisors. Applicants will be accepted by the Environmental Health Department based on the recommendation made by the Haramaya University School of Graduate Studies guideline. The applicant must cover the financial requirements otherwise need to be government-sponsored.
For admission to the program, the candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, public health, environmental science, Natural resource conservation/management, Meteorology, Chemical engineering, water and environmental engineering, and Civil engineering, with a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4 or an equivalent from any recognized institution. The applicant must score a minimum of 50% on the entrance exam. Applicants must provide at least two letters of recommendation from their employers and academic supervisors. Applicants will be accepted by the Department of Environmental Health Sciences based on the recommendation forwarded by the Haramaya University School of Graduate Studies guideline. It is up to the applicant to prove financial requirements otherwise need to be government-sponsored.
Applicants to the Ph.D. program in Environmental Health should have a second degree with a thesis or other equivalent postgraduate training in Environmental Health and related fields. A candidate must fulfill the following conditions to join the doctoral program in Environmental Health Science:
- Must have an MSc degree with a thesis or equivalent in environmental health or related fields or Masters without thesis plus one primary authored published article;
- Must have a good research plan and funding (or sponsorship letter for funding) for the research; and
Must identify qualified primary advisor (a Ph.D. holder or University rank of associate /full Professor) before admission into the program
