ABOUT

Background

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Haramaya Institute of Technology (HiT) was established in 2010 as part of the Institute's effort to address the growing national demand for qualified mechanical engineers. Originally launched as a five-year undergraduate program, the department has evolved to offer specialized streams in Mechanical Design Engineering, Motor Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Thermal Engineering. These streams are designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for industrial and research-based careers. In response to the country’s increasing need for high-level technical expertise, the department expanded its academic portfolio by launching a Master of Science (MSc) program in Manufacturing Engineering in 2021. This reflects the department's commitment to advanced education and research in critical engineering areas.

The department is aligned with the broader mission of Haramaya University and HiT, both of which prioritize community-oriented, innovative, and sustainable engineering education. It plays a vital role in supporting Ethiopia’s industrial growth and transformation through the production of competent graduates, engagement in applied research, and collaboration with industries and research institutions.

In keeping with directives from the Ministry of Education and the Ethiopian Educational Training Authority (ETA), the department continuously works to improve program quality. It regularly incorporates feedback from stakeholders, alumni, students, and employers to revise and update the curriculum. These efforts ensure that the program meets national development goals and international standards, fostering the production of engineers capable of contributing meaningfully to the country's socio-economic development.
