Background
Haramaya University (HU) is one of the oldest public higher education institutions in Ethiopia. The university has been contributing to the country’s development especially in agricultural sectors since its establishment in 1954 by producing competent and qualified graduates in different fields of studies. In addition to agricultural science, the university expanded by opening colleges and programs such as of engineering, education, law, social science and humanities, health and medical sciences.
Historically, engineering education started with B.Sc. program in agricultural engineering in 1961 in College of Agriculture. Later in 2004, the Faculty of Technology (FoT) was established in Dire Dawa campus of Haramaya University. Following the establishment of Dire Dawa University, in 2009, the FoT moved to the main campus and was renamed as Institute of Technology (IoT). In February 2016, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) Ministry of Education restructured the Institute as one of the eleven IoT’s in the country. Then, in the preceding few years, the institute is re-named as “Haramaya Institute of Technology (HiT)”. Currently, the institute is running nine B.Sc programs (each of which is a five-year program), one B.Sc. program which is a four-year, fifteen M.Sc programs and four Doctoral programs.
