ABOUT

🎯Background

As one of currently existing departments of HiT, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering was launched in 2001. The department was renamed as ‘Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering’ by merging both major Water resources and Hydraulic engineering courses in 2015. The department currently offers an undergraduate program in Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering and Engineering Hydrology in the regular program. With more than thirteen years of experience in offering the undergraduate program and observing the current demand in the field of hydraulic engineering due to increased demand for manpower in this field of study, the department has also launched a Master's Degree program in Hydraulic Engineering.
The main objectives of the program are to promote the advancement of water resources development and environmental protection through the provision of training, research and consultancy services in the water sector. The program has a mission of offering relevant and quality education and training; conducting demand driven research, and rendering accessible community services.

Primarily, the department would like to address the current necessity of specialized engineers for the field of practice and research, senior managers, and leaders in the field of the construction industry with master's degree specialization in a specific subject such as hydraulic structures and hydropower, as per the requirements of the country.
The program concentrates mainly on the core courses of hydraulic engineering design, planning, and management, apart from the allied courses on applied mathematics, statistics, and research methods. It is intimately related to the design of bridges, dams, channels, canals, and levees, and to both sanitary and environmental engineering. It is also concerned with the actual development concept designs for the various features that interact with water, such as spillways and outlet work for dams, culverts for highways, cross drainage and related structures for irrigation projects, and cooling-water facilities for thermal power plants.

🌟 Vision

Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering aspires to be a centre of excellence in the field of water resources in our country, Africa, and globally competitive by 2050.

🎯 Mission

Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering programs has a mission of offering relevant, quality education, produce qualified and competent graduate students, and training and conducting demand driven researches.

📑 Program Educational Objectives (PEO)

  • To produce highly qualified human power in Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering for higher
learning and research institutions in the country.
  • To train professionals who are capable of planning, designing, modeling, supervising, constructing hydraulic structure’s such as, dams, Head works, diversion structures, spillways, terminal structures, and sediment transport with due consideration to reliability and economy of construction, maintenance and operation.
  • To train people who can handle and solve specific problems related to planning, construction of hydraulic structures and management
  • To build capacity Hydraulic Engineers for the design of river training and river modeling techniques with regard to data collection, processing and analysis
  • To train qualified human power to design and conduct hydraulic research, experiments and tests for both practical and scientific purposes
  • To produce Engineers who equipped with skill of providing advisory services, strengthen the academic programs of the university with regard to problems related to water resources development
  • To produce leaders and managers in this field of practice who have ample knowledge of the subject matter so that they can command the construction team to achieve quality, safety, and economy in construction
  • Undertake project identification; pre-feasibility and feasibility studies of water resources projects.
  • Plan water resources and hydropower projects; design hydraulic structures required for hydropower systems, water supply systems, Irrigation systems and structures which are related with environmental protection works
  • Prepare complete contract documents for water resources projects like hydropower projects, water supply projects, Irrigation projects, and projects which are related with environmental protection works like wastewater and solid waste management
