1. PhD IN MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY

Admission Requirements

  • Graduates from a recognized University with a Masters degree in Medical Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Immunology, Tropical and Infectious Diseases, BioMedical Sciences related to Medical Microbiology
  • The applicant must have a minimum CGPA of 3.0 and above at MSc graduation
  • The applicant must submit a letter of sponsorship or secured fund for Private applicants
  • The applicant must submit a minimum of two recommendation letters from his/her previous supervisor/instructor (s) during MSc study.
  • The applicant must submit a research synopsis not more than 5 (five) pages
  • The applicant must meet all of the admission requirements of the Haramaya University as per Article 100, sub article 100.1 and sub article 100.2 .

Selection Criteria 

  • The selection criteria will be based on the requirements of Haramaya University.
    • Medical Microbiology or Clinical Microbiology work experience (20%)
    • Research synopsis presentation (20%)
    • Interview (15%)
    • Relevant publications on Medical Microbiology (30%)
    • CGPA (15%)
  • Additional selection criteria will be set by the DGC as per Article 100, sub article 100.2.1.4. of the HU senate legislation.

 *Students will register and spend their time for their PhD thesis starting from First year Scond semester on wards until completion of their work.

Duration of the training

The duration to complete the PhD program will be three to four years with a possible extension of one additional year. Based on the nature of the research additional extension could be granted.

Graduation Requirements 

Students are required to prepare a dissertation and three research manuscripts of which one must be accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal. Students must complete all the required courses and achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.0 to be eligible for graduation. The minimum grade for graduation is “B”. All other University regulations apply.

After completion of the program, the candidate will be awarded a Doctoral Degree that shall be named:

  1. PhD IN TROPICAL AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Admission Requirements

  • Graduates from a recognized University with a MSc/MPH degree or Equivalent degree in: Tropical and Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Public Health, Medical Parasitology, Clinical/Medical Laboratory Sciences, Molecular Biology, Veterinary Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Entomology, Zoology and Medical Specialities. Admission to other MSc applicants from relevant fields of study other than the above mentioned fields of specialization shall be based on the recommendation of the School graduate council (SGC).
  • The applicant must submit a letter of sponsorship or secured fund for private applicants
  • The applicant must submit a minimum of one recommendation letters from his/her previous supervisor/instructor (s) during MSc study and one from the employer institution.
  • Applicants who did not take Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, and Vector biology in BSC or MSC/MPH can apply if they are willing to take bridging courses given to undergraduate or postgraduate students. The eligibility of the applicant’s educational background will be decided by SGC.
  • The applicant must submit a research synopsis not more than 5 (five) pages
  • The applicant must meet all of the admission requirements of the Haramaya University as per Article 100, sub article 100.1 and sub article 100.2 .
  • Applicants graduated from accredited private higher institutions could also join the program based on the Sub –Article: 100.2.1.1.
  • Applicants should have a minimum of two years of related work experience and their age shouldn’t be more than 45 years old.
  • An applicant ought to prove that he/she has financial sources (sponsorship) to pursue the study program.
  • Applicants will be accepted by the school based on the decision forwarded by Post graduate Program Directorate admission guidelines.
  • Priorities is given for female applicants and from less developed regions based on sub-article 100.1.6 in case screening is a must from two or more competing applicants.
  • Applicants should be mentally healthy to fit the program
  • Special admissions like applicants with minor physical problems that would not hinder effective teaching should be considered into the school based on Article 100; sub-article100.1.6. However, any student with visual problem and problem in manipulation of laboratory equipment using his/her both hands should not be selected to join the program.
  • Exemption/waiver of course is considered according to sub-Article of 100.2.3.8

    • Research synopsis presentation, motivation and communication skill (35%)
    • Publications (30%)
    • CGPA (25%)

Each applicant must score at least 50% to join the program. But maximum intake of the eligible applicants will be determined using proposed intake plan of each year and the accommodation capability of the school based on their score of ranking. If two applicants are scored equal marks their CGPA in postgraduate program will take in to consideration and priority will be given to female applicants to join the program.

Bridging courses

Applicants who did not take courses including Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, and Vector biology in BSC or MSC could also apply to the program if they are willing to take courses given to undergraduate/postgraduate students of Medical and Health Sciences. The courses are Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, and Vector biology/Medical entomology. The applicant should take this course with in a semester.

Duration of the study

The PhD in Tropical and Infectious Diseases program is a research-based four years. The modality of the delivery of the courses will be block based. The first year is dedicated for course work. While the remaining three year is set aside for research work. However, the duration of the study may be extended for one to two years up on the discretion of the supervisor/s, School Graduate Council (SGC) and final approval of PGDP of the HrU. Under special circumstances, additional year extension will be allowed based on the supervisor/s approval, School Graduate Council (SGC) and final approval of PGDP of the HU

Graduation requirements

In order to graduate with PhD in Tropical and Infectious Diseases, students must:

  • Complete all the required courses (a total of 24 Cr. Hr) for the program and achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.0 to be eligible for graduation. The minimum grade for graduation is “B”. All other University regulations apply, according to the article 127.1.3 of HU senate legislation.
  • Prepare a dissertation and at least three manuscripts from part of his PhD work of which one published and one accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal/reputable journal.
  • Pass PhD dissertation defense and satisfy the general requirements of the PGDP of HU.
