Background
The Department of Information Technology is established in Haramaya University aimed to graduate students in high quality and make them ready to every area in the country.
Information Technology (IT) has been demanded by potential employers in the country. The demand for IT professionals has arisen because programs in computer science have not been providing sufficient number of graduates capable of fulfilling the technology needs of organizations, which are very real needs. In other words, Information technology is a relatively new and rapidly growing field started in response to practical, everyday needs of organizations.
Information Technology is a term that has two meanings. On one hand, Information Technology (Information Communication Technologies) is a general term encompassing all of computing. On the other hand, IT is used in universities to indicate a subject area that meets the computing technology needs of organizations.
ICT or IT in Ethiopia is taking roots in the lives of individuals, companies, and government and non-government organizations. This has led to the demand for skilled people that involve in the troubleshooting, administration, integration, customization, etc. of IT. Especially, the Ethiopian government has felt that ICT is an enabling sector for developmental endeavors of the nation. These endeavors require the establishment of programs that supporting the efforts by training sufficient work force. Thus, launching a science bachelor degree in Information Technology in Haramaya University is a response to this necessity.
IT professionals have assumed the leading role in driving the evolution of information technology by being able to effectively construct new software to meet the need of the society.
The Department of Information Technology plays an active role in advancing the intellectual frontiers of information technology, creating new computer technology and applying that technology to meet the needs of today's technological society.
Vision
Our vision is to create an environment where all students, staff and community have easy access to technology resources and information, and to provide an infrastructure that supports the vision, mission and goals of the University’s strategic plan. Moreover, the department envisions to actively participate in research and project works at university, national and international arenas. Doing fruitful community activities regarding to our discipline is also our main scope as a department.
Objectives
The objectives of the IT Department are to train
- high quality IT graduates with entrepreneurial and problem solving mind sets, by providing them with broad knowledge and skills in information technology, management, configuration and maintenance of ICT infrastructures;
- graduates who possess the right combination of knowledge and practical skills to take care of an organization’s technology and infrastructure needs and people that needs it;
- professionals that take responsibilities for selecting hardware and software products appropriate for an organization, integrating those products with organizational needs and infrastructure;
- graduates who will take the responsibility for installing, customizing and maintaining applications (network installation, network administration, Web site design, development of multimedia resources, and installation of communication components and oversight of email system) for the organization;
- professionals to work in organizations implementing and managing automated information systems for different scientific, educational, commercial and other purposes; and
- graduates that plan and manage the technology life cycle by which an organization’s technology is maintained, upgraded and replaced.
