Background

The College of Computing and Informatics was established in April 2008 by bringing together three departments- Computer Science, Management Information System and Information Studies- that formed the then Faculty of Business and Economics. The college was established following the implementation of the university’s re-engineered business processes.

Soon after the establishment of the college, new curricula in Information System and Statistics were developed. The new curricula got the approval of University Senate. The first batch of students in Statistics joined the department in 2008. Its first students were the ones who were admitted to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, which was part of the then Faculty of Education. However, the first batch of students in Information Systems was admitted in the 2009/10 academic year. The college has opened further BSc programs in Information Technology and Software Engineering based on the need assessments made at national level. The college now has six separate departments of instruction: Computer Science, Information Technology, Information System, Information Science, Software Engineering, and Statistics. The college is currently running a regular undergraduate (a four- and five-year BSc degree), post-graduate (MSc degree) and continuing education (BSc degree) programs.

To ensure that learners have meaningful knowledge, skills and values in computer science and statistics, students in all departments within CCI are given at least one Statistics and one computer application common courses. Besides, these departments draw on other departments within CCI to meet their instructional needs
