1. Rationale

The importance of English Language is unquestionable that it is among the few languages used internationally (become global language) as a medium of communication and all forms of interaction (economic, political, etc) between nations across countries and continents English is the second official language in Ethiopia it is used as a medium of instruction in secondary schools ,colleges and universities. It is also a language of international relation be it diplomacy, business, trade investment, tourism etc English has a vital role in the overall development of the country. The undergraduate program in English is one of the first program dating to 1950when the universities ,colleges was opened in 1950since then it has been producing graduates who could teach English in the secondary schools and others who work in the media and public relations ,diplomacy and related fields.

The Department of English Language and Literature works towards achieving the mission of the country at large and university in particular by producing qualified trainees with the required competence. This curriculum includes courses designed to provide competence skills and overall knowledge based training. It is believed that students should have adequate training and practice in the subject matter to thrive in the modern employment market. Among others, students should know about how human language functions. They also need to know about the principles that guide the scientific study of language. In addition, they need to practice different levels of writing, reading, listening, and speaking in English.

Overall the key domains of the undergraduate curriculum in English language and literature are speaking ,reading, writing language development( vocabulary and grammar)literature , linguistics (understanding the structure of English –phonology, morphology syntax and making semantics pragmatics and discourse) and communication ,The mode of delivery is designed to help trainees develop practical skills in language use with the understanding of the editing principles systems the trainees engage in oral communication in a variety of situations and develop the oral communication skills necessary to be able to transfer the same skills to their job. They also require analysing literary texts and conducting research to solve problems.

In general, the trainees must have full mastery of the target language so that they have the competence and confidence to use the language for their purposes. Overall the curriculum is designed focusing on the competencies the graduates need to attain by integrating English Language knowledge and skills, and aspires to effectively prepare 3 professionals for diverse job opportunities in the areas where the country needs skilled professionals. There is a great need for English Language specialists in various areas such as public relations, communications, interpretations, etc.

2. Admission Requirement

Entry to the department would require

  • Students who successfully completed freshman program and meet the minimum requirements required i.e. With a minimum CGPA of 2.0
  • A satisfactory result in the higher education entrance examination;
  • A good background of English language ;
  • A CGPA of 2.00 and above in the diploma program for advanced standing    students from any recognized institution; and
  • Satisfying the general admission requirements of the university.

3. Graduation Requirements

To graduate in English Language and Literature, a trainee should have:
✓ A minimum overall CGPA of 2.00,
✓ No “F” grade in any of the courses a total of 181 ECTS

4. Degree Nomenclature

Upon successful completion of the program, candidates would be awarded ‘Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Language and Literature’ /በአርት የባችለር ዲግሪ በእንግሊዝኛ ቋንቋና ስነ-ጽሁፍ/
