Background

Haramaya University (HU) has gone through a series of transformations since its establishment as a higher learning institution. Over a course of the last 6 decades, the University has been contributing its fair share to the betterment and development of the lives and livelihoods of the people of Ethiopia through imparting knowledge, conducting
research and extension, and realizing community engagement programs. Since its inception, HU established various Colleges, Schools, departments and programs as part of its core activity for achieving its teaching-learning goal. In line with this goal, the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH), as one of the existing academic units of HU was established in 2009 so as to train skilled manpower in various fields of Social Sciences and Humanities. The establishment of the division of Natural and Social Sciences to provide supportive courses followed by the establishment of the Faculty of Education in 1996 and later the university’s Business Process Reengineering (BPR) were the three important developments that led to the establishment of the College. Most importantly, it was the establishment of the Faculty of Education that laid the foundations for senior departments such as English, History, Geography, and Afan Oromo. In no more than one decade since its establishment, the college has relatively achieved a significant milestone in learning-teaching, research, and community engagement. In learning-teaching, the college has witnessed a tremendous expansion in its fields of study from four academic programs to launching demand-driven ten undergraduate, eight MA, and three PhD programs. The college has also created an enabling environment for its staff and students. All academics have reasonably well-furnished offices though they are forced to share small rooms for three or four. The majority of the classrooms were turned to moderate smart-classrooms furnished with fixed desktops and LCDs. Postgraduate students of the college have a mini-library which is equipped with computers connected to the internet. The college currently offers ten first degree (BA/BSc.) programs, eight master’s degree programs, and three PhD programs in its three departments and three schools. These programs are producing competent professionals who uphold the principle of equality, social justice, professional integrity and high ethical standards with the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Vision

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities aspires to become a leading interdisciplinary college that promotes high quality education through teaching, research and outreach programmes. Our goal is to become the college of choice for students and the country’s best place of scholarship in the fields of social sciences and humanities. Towards realizing this vision, we always strive to provide quality education that is capable of equipping students with high quality learning and thinking experience necessary to surpass in their fields of experts.

Mission

The mission of the College is to produce highly qualified professionals required for the transformation of the country through providing high quality education in various disciplines of social sciences and humanities.

Accomplishments to date

Concerning research endeavours, the staff members of the college are actively involved in the research undertakings of the university, mainly under the theme “Human and Social Development”, which is intended to inform policy and public debate in the areas of Social Sciences and Humanities. Furthermore, in collaboration with the university’s Research  and Publication Office, the college initiated and established a biannual Journal entitled “East African Journal of Social Sciences & Humanities” (EAJSSH) in 2016 to create a forum of scholarly and scientific communications in the disciplines of Social Sciences and Humanities and thereby to contribute to the University’s mission to advance and disseminate knowledge. Apart from publishing six volumes (two issues per year) without interruption since its inception, the launch of EAJSSH enabled the university to diversify its publications to satisfy the needs of its researchers in the areas of social sciences and humanities. It is also serving the university as one of the outlets for disseminating its diverse research outputs in the various disciplines even including the areas of agricultural sciences. Moreover, postgraduate students of the university use the journal as an option for publishing their research works as a fulfilment for their doctoral dissertation. With the commitment of its editorial board and technical editors, the journal is currently functioning as the recognized platform for scholars to communicate their scientific works to other scholarsb in Ethiopia and beyond. Owing to this, Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MoSHE) declared the journal on December 18, 2020 as one of the first accredited national journals of Ethiopia after fulfilling adequately the standards set for national journals’ evaluation and accreditation. It is currently publishing the 2nd issue of the 6th volume.

Future Plans

The college is striving in its full potential to develop itself in line with the recent categorization of Haramaya University to be among the research and postgraduate universities of Ethiopia. The worthwhile strength of the college at the moment is that it is hosting diverse fields of study at the MA and PhD levels. As these programs have high demand now, they will remain most likely the same in the future. The college also strives to stand tall by strengthening its existing programs and by launching more demand driven new MA and PhD programs in Tourism and Hotel Management, Development Studies, Geo-information Sciences (GIS), Sociology, Geda Studies, Afan Oromo, Literature and Communication, Journalism and Mass Communication, Political Sciences, etc. in the future.
