Re: Motivation Letter
Dear Selection Committee,
I am writing to apply for the Ph.D. position ‘Environmental Risk Management Under Increasing
Extreme and Uncertainty (MERIT)’, Research cluster I (Biophysical System and Nature-Based
Solution), which your university announced. The reputation of the Haramaya University (HrU)
education system and collaborative nature of the Ph.D. project is of great interest to me. My
academic background, professional and research experiences in resource management, range
ecosystem, ecology, climate change, agriculture, biodiversity, disaster risk management,
restoration ecology, and ecosystem modeling have nurtured my passion for using education
and research to create a resilient society in drylands. This program is an ideal platform for
utilization of my expertise and for gaining additional research skills which are necessary for
developing suitable nature-based solution packages with potential risk mitigation.
Moreover, I have proven academic, professional, and research experiences. I am an Assistant
Professor of Rangeland Ecosystem Ecologist in the CAES, HrU, and Natural Resource,
Environment and Climate Change Sub-Theme leader. I hold a BSc degree in Animal and Range
Science (2010), and two MSc degrees: Rangeland Ecology and Management (2015), and
Environmental Resource Management (2020). I am a licensed Senior Environmental
Pollution, Ecosystem and Biodiversity, and Livestock Feed Processing and Management
Consultant.
Currently, I am teaching, advising and examining Range Ecology and Dryland Biodiversity MSc
students at HrU; conducting different research; providing community and consultancy
services; communicating scientific findings through article publications, journal reviews,
conference presentations, workshops and training; developing a research project,
periodic and terminal reports of several assignments; and capacity building to local
communities.
For my PhD research project, I plan to focus on one of the natural hazards (drought) in
rangelands of Ethiopia. Drought, a complex and slowly encroaching natural hazard with
significant and pervasive socio-economic and environmental impacts, is known to cause more
deaths and displace more people than any other natural disaster. While droughts affect every
climate zone, drylands are particularly susceptible to drought and its impacts. In Ethiopia,
around 62% of land mass in lowland areas (rangeland resources and community in these areas)
are under threat droughts. Developing environmental risk management (ERM) with potential
for risk mitigation is very crucial. However, studies require for developing suitable (ERM) is
meager in Ethiopia. In the current PhD position, I can see several novel ideas, which I would
very passionately be explore, if given the opportunity of. Understanding state and connectivity
of rangeland biophysical resources, impacts of drought on rangeland biophysical resources,
rangeland biogeochemistry and feedbacks under current and future climatic condition. Hence, I
am ambitious in developing ERM strategies with potential for risk mitigation.
Over the past few years, I have been involved in megaprojects as PI and co-PI (examples are
Participatory Range Management in Ethiopia (approx. 500K USD), Estimating Livestock Carrying
Capacity and Stocking Rate in Bale Mountains Eco-region (approx. 100K USD). I had the
opportunity to work with renowned organization and research institutions , which
equipped me with skills of working and living under diverse cultural and environmental
conditions. I developed and led several multi-disciplinary research projects funded by
international and national funding institutions, which equipped me with skills of
developing and coordinating implementation of different projects. I received a number of
specialized trainings and published >10 articles in peer reviewed international journals.
I have more than 11 years of research and consultancy experiences matches with the
announced research areas. Some of the researches completed are my BSC and MSc research
project. My BSc Research project focus on characterization and the relationships of biophysical
resources specifically livestock feed and livestock in Walaita zuria woreda of Walaita zone. My
first and second MSc Thesis Dissertations also fucuses assessment of rangeland biophysical
resources and their connectiveness in rangelands of Ethiopia. In addition, I have also
successfully completed more than 13 research and development projects that matches with the
announced project areas.
In sum, my strong motivation, academic background and research experience will allow me to
complete this PhD project effectively. After graduating from this PhD program, I plan to pursue
a post-doctoral placement in my areas. I would like to research and teach in my areas. I also
hope that someday I will be able to set up an excellent consultancy company so our future
generations can produce quality research. I truly believe that gaining admission and scholarship
to the HrU will take me a step ahead in achieving my goals. Thank you very much for
considering my inquiry and I am looking forward to hearing from you.
With Kind Regards,
Mohammed Mussa
