Key Responsibilities

  • Advise the Senior Software Engineer on Database development framework and processes.
  • Maintains and applies up to date, specialist knowledge of database concepts, object and data modelling techniques and design principles, and a detailed knowledge of the full range of database architectures, software and facilities available.
  • Analyses data requirements, to establish, modify or maintain a data model.
  • Takes account of Enterprise specialist requirements. Interprets the model into an appropriate database schema within set policies.
  • Evaluates potential solutions, demonstrating, installing and commissioning selected products.
  • Carry out project management tasks on Database design projects as assigned by Software Development Manager.
  • Adhere to IT development standards on database naming conventions, coding standards, version control, release management and testing standards.
  • Assisting the software development manager in providing enterprise reporting and business intelligence services to IT and the programme at large.
  • Takes part in reviews of own work and leads reviews of colleagues work.
  • Ensuring that the appropriate disaster recovery measures are in place.
  • Performance tuning of all database environments to all systems are available and are using latest technology.


  • Degree or above in Computer Science or BSc IT or related fields
  • Minimum 4 years of technical work experience in MS SQL, MySQL and other databases
  • Has been a Database administrator or equivalent for three years.
  • Database design and software development experience.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and completely.
  • Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them.
  • Ability to multi-task and stay organized in a dynamic work environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer languages.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer logic and flow-charting.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer program design methods and techniques.
  • Ability to learn new programming languages quickly.
  • Assists the junior developers in designing programs and databases.
  • Ability to write, edit, and debug computer programs to achieve desired output.
  • Expert knowledge of maintaining and debugging live software systems.
  • Expert knowledge of writing program documentation.
  • Strong communications skills, both in writing and speaking.
  • Strong understanding of the software development cycle.
  • Ability to work with technical and non-technical business owners to get things done.
  • Strong communications skills, both in writing and speaking in English.


  • MCSD (Must give evidence of the exam certificate done by an authorised testing body, i.e. Pearson VUE, Prometric etc.)
  • Knowledge on how to work within an Agile Process framework for development
  • Experience of working in a research establishment
  • Knowledge on working within an AGILE and ITIL Framework
  • Deploying Enterprise Databases over a WAN environment
  • Microsoft SQL server administration
  • MySQL database administration
